Cubs acquire reliever Zulueta from Mariners, designate lefty Nikhazy

The Cubs on Monday acquired right-handed pitcher (YOZ-ver zoo-loo-etta) from the Seattle Mariners for cash and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher was designated for assignment. The 40-man roster stands at 40.

Zulueta, 28, is 2-3 with a 5.75 ERA (13 ER/20.1 IP), 21 strikeouts, 16 walks and a .256 opponent average in 22 games, all in relief, with Triple-A Tacoma (Seattle) this season. He has allowed fewer than two earned runs in 18 of his 22 outings and held the opponent hitless in nine of those games. Zulueta, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners on June 10, has not appeared in a Major League game this year.

The right-hander is 1-0 with a 5.32 ERA (14 ER/23.2 IP), 25 strikeouts, 11 walks and a .230 opponent average in 19 career major league games with Cincinnati in 2024 and 2025. He made his major league debut on June 25, 2024, and hurled 3.0 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts. In 173 minor league games, including 20 starts, he is 14-16 with a 3.89 ERA (110 ER/254.1 IP) and 321 strikeouts, and was named to the MLB Futures Game in 2022 and 2023.

The Remedios, Cuba, native signed a minor league contract with Toronto as a free agent on June 10, 2019. He was claimed off waivers by Cincinnati on March 28, 2024, before being acquired by Seattle on Jan. 15, 2026, for Minor League pitcher Dusty Revis.

Nikhazy, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on April 28 and made seven appearances (five starts) with the I-Cubs, going 0-1 with a 9.13 ERA (23 ER/22.2 IP).
