Was born in Markham, ON and last season he became the 12th Canadian-born player to play for the Mets...He became just the third Canadian to start a game for the Mets and the first since 1962...Nicknamed the Canadian Cannon...His full name is Jonah Reid Tin Chee Matthew Tong...Each part of his full name has meaning...Jonah is derived from his mother's admiration of Joe Montana but his oldest sister was already named Montana so they settled on Jonah...Reid comes from his maternal great-grandmother...Tin Chee was chosen as a middle name by his grandparents because of a Chinese custom of allowing the grandparents to choose a name and Tin Chee means "Gift from God"...Matthew is his mother's maiden name and she kept it as part of all of her children's middle names...Tong has been their family's name since his great-grandfather arrived in Canada to help build the railroad...Is currently third highest rated prospect in the Mets system and No. 46 in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline...Began his high school career at Bill Crothers Secondary School in Markham, Ontario before transferring to Georgia Premier Academy in Statesboro Georgia...Was previously committed to North Dakota State before getting drafted by the Mets.

Won his Major League debut on Aug. 29 vs. Miami (5.0 IP, ER, 6 K)...Is one of five pitchers in franchise history to throw five or more innings and issue no walks in their Major League debut...At 22 years old and 71 days he became the youngest pitcher to start for the Mets since Jenrry Mejia (20 years old and 339 days) on Sept. 15, 2010 and the youngest Mets starting pitcher to make their Major League debut since Jon Niese (21 years old and 311 days) made his debut on Sept. 2, 2008... At the time of his call-up, he was the Minor League leader in strikeouts (179) and ERA (1.43)... He was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year and Baseball America Minor League Pitcher of the Year...Was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Month for both May and June.

2024

Spent a majority of his season with High-A Brooklyn and also pitched for Double-A Binghamton and Single-A St. Lucie...In total, he appeared in 25 games and made 23 starts. He finished with a 6-4 record and a 3.03 ERA (38 ER/113.0 IP) while recording 160 strikeouts.
