SEATTLE, Wash. - Mariners shortstop Jean Segura was elected by the fans to the 32nd and final roster spot on the American League All-Star Team through the 2018 Camping World MLB All-Star Final Vote ballot as announced this evening on MLB Network.
"I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote for me over the last couple of days," Segura said. "The fans in the Northwest and in the Dominican Republic have been unbelievable. I also want to thank my family and all my teammates for their support. And I couldn't have done this without the Mariners front office that rallied behind me and campaigned non-stop."
"Just a tremendous job by our fans in really coming out in force for Jean," Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto said. "I was down on the field around lunch time and thought it was the most remarkable fan support I've ever seen: everyone coming together on a moment's notice and celebrating together!"
"In addition, I want to commend his teammates and our front office for really rallying around Jean and supporting him. He's truly a deserving All-Star and I am so proud to see his terrific first half rewarded."
Segura is the Mariners 4th All-Star this season, joining DH Nelson Cruz, RHP Edwin Díaz and OF Mitch Haniger, who were each selected on Sunday to represent Seattle on the American League All-Star team. This is the first time since 2014 the Mariners have had 4 All-Stars (Robinson Canó, Félix Hernández, Fernando Rodney and Kyle Seager) and only the second time since Seattle had 5 All-Stars in 2003 (Bret Boone, Edgar Martinez, Jamie Moyer, Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Ichiro Suzuki).
Segura becomes the 3rd shortstop in club history to represent the Mariners at the Midsummer Classic, joining Craig Reynolds (1978) and Alex Rodriguez (1996-98, 2000).
Segura, 28, is batting .329 (116x353) with 62 runs, 24 doubles, 2 triples, 7 home runs, 47 RBI,14 stolen bases and a .356 on-base percentage this season. Among American League leaders, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound shortstop ranks 2nd in hits, T2nd in multi-hit games, 4th in batting, 8th in runs scored and T10th in stolen bases. He leads the Major Leagues with 15 games of at least 3 hits and has more multi-hit games (37) than games without a hit (22) this season. This is Segura's 2nd career selection to the All-Star Game (also: 2013 with Milwaukee).
The 2018 All-Star Game will be played at Nationals Park on Tuesday, July 17 at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT. The 89th annual Midsummer Classic will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 160 countries. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
