Ichiro Suzuki to throw out ceremonial first pitch for Mariners Opening Day at T-Mobile Park
The Seattle Mariners announced today that Ichiro Suzuki, who is to be inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame in August, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Friday, April 15, when the Mariners open the 2022 season at T-Mobile Park against the Houston Astros.
Tickets for Opening Day are still available but are selling fast. Tickets for the remaining eight games of the Opening Homestand are available, including two more games against the Astros, three against the Texas Rangers (April 19-21) and a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals (April 22-24).
Special events for the Opening Homestand include:
- Ken Griffey Jr. #42 Bobblehead Night on Saturday, April 16 (first 20,000 fans);
- Mariners Clear Tote Bag Day, presented by MLB Network, on Sunday, April 17 (first 10,000 fans);
- Mariners Puffy Vest Night on Friday, April 22 (first 10,000 fans) and the first College Night ticket special (Mariners.com/GroupEvents);
- Little League Day on Sunday, April 24 with Mitch Haniger caps for all kids 14 and under.
Mariners Hall of Fame Weekend
Ichiro’s long and illustrious career will be celebrated at T-Mobile Park during Mariners Hall of Fame Weekend August 26-28.
- Friday, August 26 – Ichiro Hall of Fame Fireworks Night, presented by T-Mobile;
- Saturday, August 27 – Ichiro Hall of Fame Induction Night, with Ichiro T-shirts for the first 20,000 fans, courtesy of Sato Pharmaceutical;
- Sunday, August 28 – Ichiro Hall of Fame Bobblehead Day (first 20,000 fans).
A 10-time All-Star, Ichiro was the American League Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in 2001. His Major League career spanned 19 seasons with the Mariners, New York Yankees and Miami Marlins, during which time he collected 3,089 hits. He also played nine seasons with the Orix Blue Wave of Japan’s Pacific League, where he had 1,278 hits.
Ichiro currently serves as an instructor with the Mariners Major League and AAA teams, focusing on outfield play, base running and, in conjunction with hitting coaches, batting. He also holds the title of Special Assistant to the Chairman.
Ichiro’s professional baseball career came to a close on March 21, 2019, after playing in the Mariners two-game series against the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo, Japan. It is widely expected he will be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame when he is eligible in 2025.
When inducted, Ichiro will join current members of the Mariners Hall of Fame (in order of induction): Alvin Davis, Dave Niehaus, Jay Buhner, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, Dan Wilson, Ken Griffey Jr., Lou Piniella and Jamie Moyer.
