Here's a look at Monday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:
AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST
Blue Jays: Jordan Groshans, SS/3B (No. 5) --3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI (Class A Lansing) Groshans extended his hitting streak to eight games with his sixth multihit game of the year. The 2018 first-round pick hit .296 through 48 games in his pro debut and is off to a fast start in his full-season debut. Groshans has hits in 12 of the 13 games he's played this season and is hitting .375 with nine RBIs. Blue Jays prospects stats »
Orioles: Cadyn Grenier, SS (No.17) --2-for-4 (Class A Delmarva) Grenier, 22, put together his third straight multihit performance and boosted his average to .268 in the process. Grenier, whom the Orioles took with the 37th overall pick in last year's Draft, hit .216 in 43 games last season in his professional debut. Orioles prospects stats »
Rays: Brendan McKay, LHP/DH (No. 3, MLB No. 28) --5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K (Double-A Montgomery) McKay gave up a homer to lead off the second inning, but was otherwise in complete control is his best start of the year. The lefty, a first-round pick in the 2017 Draft, got off to a strong start as he retired the side in order and struck out two in the first. He also ended the start, during which he threw 52 of his 66 pitches for strikes, on a high note, retiring nine of the final 10 batters he faced. McKay, a two-way player has only been serving as a designated hitter this season and is hitting .200 with six RBIs through 10 games. Rays prospects stats »
Brendan McKay posts his strongest start of the young season (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 9 K) and continues to rack up Ks. The #Rays' No. 3 prospect (#MLB No. 28) now has 27 in 13.2 IP!
Red Sox: Tanner Houck, RHP (No. 6) --5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K (Double-A Portland) Houck struck out the first two batters he faced and proceeded to notch at least one strikeout in each of his five innings. The 22-year-old, a 2017 first-round pick, has been dominant since giving up seven runs in four innings in his first start of the season. Monday he matched a career high with nine strikeouts. In the past two starts, Houck has been charged with just one run over 10 innings. Red Sox prospects stats »
Yankees: Frank German, RHP (No. 21) --5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K (Class A Advanced Tampa) The 2018 fourth-round pick struggled with his command, issuing more than one walk in a game for the first time in his career, but he still managed to put together a strong start. German threw 44 of his 80 pitches for strikes across five innings, the longest start of his career, and was able to generate strikeouts to work his way out of jams and surrender just one run despite the four walks. Yankees prospects stats »
AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL
Indians: Bo Naylor, C (No. 4) --2-for-4 (Class A Lake County) Naylor, the 29th overall pick from the 2018 Draft, is off to a slow start in his full-season debut, hitting .214 through 12 games. The 19-year-old has two multihit games, but he also has struck out 17 times. Indians prospects stats »
Royals: Josh Staumont, RHP (No. 21) --1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (Triple-A Omaha) Staumont needed just 16 pitches (10 strikes) to strike out the side in one inning of relief. The right-hander, who began his career as a starter but struggled with command, was roughed up in one appearance but has otherwise been lights out this season. Staumont hasn't given up a run in six of his seven appearances and has accumulated 14 strikeouts over nine innings. Royals prospects stats »
Tigers: Anthony Castro, RHP (No. 24) --3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K (Double-A Erie) After giving up six runs in 2 2/3 innings over his first two appearances, Castro has bounced back with a pair of scoreless outings (5 2/3 innings). Part of the reason for Castro's dominance over those two outings has been his ability to generate swings and misses, racking up 10 strikeouts over that span. Castro spent most of 2018 with Class A Advanced Lakeland, but he made three appearances with Erie and gave up 10 runs (nine earned) over 10 innings. Tigers prospects stats »
Twins: Royce Lewis, SS (No. 1, MLB No. 4) --2-for-5, 1 BB (Class A Advanced Fort Myers) After an 0-for-13 stretch, Lewis has rebounded with back-to-back two-hit games, going 4-for-10 in the process. The 19-year-old impressed in his full-season debut, hitting .292/.352/.451 through 121 games across two levels of Class A ball last year, but he is off to a slow start, hitting .230/.360/.295 through 16 games this season. Twins prospects stats »
White Sox: Alec Hansen, RHP (No. 15) --2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K (Class A Advanced Winston-Salem) Hansen gave up his first hit of the year, but he still has yet to allow a run after cruising through two innings and throwing 19 of his 31 pitches for strikes. The right-hander has spun eight scoreless innings over six appearances to begin the season. Hansen missed the first two months of 2018 with forearm soreness and never really got going. Not only has has Hansen kept opponents scoreless this year, but he's also notched 14 strikeouts compared to two walks. White Sox prospects stats »
AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST
A’s: Parker Dunshee, RHP (No. 18) -- 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K (Double-A Midland) Dunshee's longest start of the year also turned out to be his first scoreless start of the year. The 24-year-old, a seventh-round pick from the 2017 Draft, retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced and ultimately threw 70 of his 97 pitchers for strikes as he carved his way through the Tulsa lineup. Dunshee got his first taste of Double-A Midland during his 2018 campaign and fared well, posting a 2.01 ERA over 12 starts. Of course the 2019 sample size is small, but the right-hander is off to a strong start, having given up six earned runs over 23 frames. A's prospects stats »
Angels: Luis Madero, RHP (No. 22) --3 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K (Class A Advanced Inland Empire) Madero surrendered his first run of the season but still put together another solid outing. The right-hander, whom the Angels acquired at the 2017 Trade Deadline, has 16 strikeouts through 11 innings this season. Angels prospects stats »
Astros: Yordan Alvarez, OF (No. 3, MLB No. 41) --3-for-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI (Triple-A Round Rock) Alvarez continued his hot streak with another multihit performance, including a solo homer in the ninth inning. Alvarez has homered in back-to-back games and is 5-for-9 over the past two days. He's hitting .339 through 17 games this season. The 21-year-old, who signed with the Dodgers and was traded to the Astros shortly after in 2016, broke out for a career-high 20 homers in 88 games last season and appears ready to top that number in 2019. Astros prospects stats »
First to 🔟#Astros' Yordan Alvarez is destroying PCL pitching. 3-for-5 with a 2B & HR today and is the first to reach double-digits in @MiLB. He's yet to go more than 2 games without a dinger!
Mariners: Jarred Kelenic, OF (No. 2, MLB No. 53) --2-for-3, RBI (Class A West Virginia) Kelenic got off to a 2-for-25 start of the first seven games but has been red-hot ever since. Acquired by the Mariners in an offseason trade with the Mets, the 2018 first-round pick has a hit in nine straight games since that skid and has boosted his average all the way to .317. Mariners prospects stats »
Rangers: Brock Burke, LHP (No. 9) --4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K (Double-A Frisco) Burke gave up seven runs (five earned) over two innings in his last start, but he more than redeemed himself as he helped lead Frisco to a win over Arkansas. Burke, 22, was lights out (1.95 ERA) over nine appearances with Frisco last season and has posted a 3.86 ERA this season, although that's largely inflated by his last start. Burke began his career with the Rays but was dealt to the Rangers as part of a three-team trade in December. Rangers prospects stats »
NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST
Braves: Tucker Davidson, LHP (No. 22) --5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 3 K (Double-A Mississippi) Davidson, 23, is getting his first glimpse of Double-A ball, and it's hard to argue with the results. Through three starts, the former 19th-round pick (2016) has yielded just one earned run over 14 innings. Davidson has issued 10 walks, which is a bit concerning, but he also has 14 strikeouts with opponents hitting just .130 off of him. Braves prospects stats »
Marlins: Zac Gallen, RHP (No. 18) --6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K (Triple-A New Orleans) Gallen, who entered the game with one walk through 18 innings, didn't have his best command, but he did manage to keep runs off the board, something he's been very, very good at all year. The 23-year-old, a former third-round pick, posted a 3.65 ERA through 25 starts last season. This year, his ERA sits at a minuscule 0.36. Gallen threw 100 pitches, 68 strikes, and pitched into the seventh for the second time in four starts. Marlins prospects stats »
Stepping up to the plate against #Marlins' No. 18 prospect Zac Gallen? Good luck. 👀
Tonight for @cakesbaseball: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K This season: 25.1 IP, 12 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 31 K
Mets: Anthony Kay, LHP (No. 8) -- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 K (Double-A Binghamton) After striking out exactly four batters in each of his first three starts this season, Kay more than doubled that as he fell one short of his career best. The 2016 first-rounder retired the first 10 batters he faced, eight via strikeout, and threw 57 of his 90 pitches for strikes. Kay split last season between two levels of Class A ball and has a 1.89 ERA through his first four Double-A starts. Mets prospects stats »
Phillies: Alec Bohm, 3B (No. 1, MLB No. 56) --3-for-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI (Class A Lakewood) Bohm has hits in seven of his past eight games and is 8-for-12 over his past three, collecting multiple hits in each of those contests. The third overall pick from last year's Draft is hitting .367 in his full season debut, and Monday's three RBIs tied his career high. After failing to homer in 40 games after he was drafted, Bohm has gone deep twice in 17 games this season. Phillies prospects stats »
Nationals: Wil Crowe, RHP (No. 4) --7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K (Double-A Harrisburg),Tim Cate, LHP (No. 5) --6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K (Class A Hagerstown) Crowe and Cate are both off to fast starts this season, and that trend continued on Monday. Crowe, who has given up three runs through 23 innings this season, threw 61 of his 81 pitches for strikes and retired the first seven batters he faced. Cate, a second-round pick from the 2018 Draft, lowered his ERA to 1.27 and has surrendered just one run over his last 12 innings. Cate was pitching out of the stretch for most of the night, and although he allowed a baserunner in each inning, none of the made it past first base. Nationals prospects stats »
#Nats prospects Wil Crowe (No. 4) and Tim Cate (No. 4) were bringing the 🔥 tonight:
Brewers: Braden Webb, RHP (No. 12) --5 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 1 K (Double-A Biloxi) Webb put together a rather unusual pitching line as he held Jacksonville without a hit, but his inability to locate -- he threw just 42 of his 84 pitches for strikes -- resulted in a run that scored on a wild pitch after the bases had been loaded via two walks and a hit batter. The 23-year-old has given up one run in three of his four starts this season but has run into some tough luck and is just 1-3. Brewers prospects stats »
Cubs: Nico Hoerner, SS (No. 2, MLB No. 95) --1-for-4, HR (Double-A Tennessee) Hoerner, hitting .304 through 16 games, hit his first Double-A homer, but did so via an inside-the-park homer after lining a ball into the left-field corner and racing around the bases. D-backs: Kevin Ginkel, RHP (No. 30) --1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (Double-A Jackson) Fifteen pitches, nine strikes. That's all Ginkel needed to carve his way through another stellar relief performance. Dodgers: Dustin May, RHP (No. 2, MLB No. 65) --5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (Double-A Tulsa) May pitched five innings for the third time this season and lowered his ERA to 1.89 in the process. May reached Double-A late in the 2018 season, and that experience is paying dividends as he's off to a strong start in 2019. Through four starts (19 innings), May has struck out 20 and issued six walks with opponents hitting .179 against him. Dodgers prospects stats »
Giants: Shaun Anderson, RHP (No. 4) --5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K (Triple-A Sacramento) Anderson, who threw 56 of his 87 pitches for strikes, gave up a run on back-to-back hits in the first inning, but he appeared to be locked in after that as he went on to retired 15 of the next 18 batters faced to finish his outing. Rockies: Yonathan Daza, OF (No. 14) --2-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI (Triple-A Albuquerque) Multihit games with RBIs are starting to become a habit for Daza. Daza went 0-for-11 at the plate in a brief stint in the Majors this season, but he has been red-hot in the Minors hitting .385 with hits in seven of his eight games. Rockies prospects stats »
