Twins give No. 3 pick Lackey third-highest bonus in MLB Draft history (sources)

CLEVELAND -- The Twins announced Wednesday that they have signed all 21 of their selections from the 2026 Draft, and a source told MLB.com that top pick Vahn Lackey will receive the third-largest bonus in Draft history.

Lackey’s deal is said to be for $9,497,500, behind only 2026 No. 1 pick Roch Cholowsky (White Sox) and No. 2 pick Grady Emerson (Rays). The slot value for the No. 3 pick was $9,740,100, and the Twins’ total bonus pool is $16,929,600. Sources told MLB.com’s Jim Callis that second-round pick Carson Tinney signed for more than $400,000 under slot, while third-rounder Ethan Wachsmann will receive $2.25 million -- more than twice the slot value for the No. 79 pick.

Other noteworthy selections from the Draft included TCU right-hander Tommy LaPour, who was considered a top-two-round talent before dealing with elbow issues this year, and fifth-rounder Steele Murdock, a right-hander from UC-San Diego. LaPour received full slot value, while Murdock came in slightly below.

Lackey, who turned 21 earlier this month, was a two-year starter at catcher for Georgia Tech, emerging as a top Draft prospect during a huge 2026 season at the plate for the Yellow Jackets. He slashed .397/.519/.772 with 20 home runs and 15 stolen bases, and the Twins expect he can stick at catcher in the Minor and Major Leagues.

Lackey is the Twins’ highest Draft pick since they took Royce Lewis first overall in 2017. The last time Minnesota took a catcher with its first Draft pick was 2001, when it selected Hall of Famer Joe Mauer with the No. 1 overall pick.

The Twins will host Lackey at Target Field prior to Friday night’s game against the Athletics.
