Injuries & Moves: Kelly returns; Glasnow to 60-day IL

September 18th, 2024

LATEST NEWS

Sept. 18: RHP activated from the injured list; LHP selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City; RHP and RHP optioned to Triple-A; RHP moved to 60-day IL
Kelly makes his return after being placed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation on Aug. 31. Logue, on the other hand, was signed to a Minor League deal on Thursday, and gives the Dodgers some coverage out of the bullpen from the left side.

Miller struggled all season long and wasn’t able to produce like the club expected. The right-hander finished this season with an 8.52 ERA over 56 innings.

INJURY UPDATES

RHP/DH (elbow surgery)
Expected return:
2025 (as a pitcher)
Ohtani threw 10 pitches in the bullpen on Aug. 24, his first time throwing off a mound since having elbow surgery last September. Manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani came out of the session feeling good.

The plan is for Ohtani to ramp up and face hitters in live practice settings before the end of the season and then shut down for the offseason. The two-way superstar will not pitch for the Dodgers in 2024, but he is on track to return to pitching in 2025. (Last updated: Aug. 25)

10-day/15-day injured list

RHP (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return:
Likely 2025
Stone was scheduled to play catch at loanDepot park for the first time since landing on the IL on Sept. 6, but the right-hander was still experiencing discomfort in the back of his shoulder and the session won’t happen for at least a couple more days.

Given where the Dodgers are in the calendar, Stone’s regular season has come to an end and the chances of him returning in the postseason is “very unlikely,” according to manager Dave Roberts. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

LHP (bone spur in left big toe)
Expected return: Before the end of the regular season
Kershaw threw about 80 pitches in a bullpen session on Sept. 18 at loanDepot park, the most significant step in the right direction since the left-hander landed on the injured list on Aug. 31

If things continue to progress, the Dodgers and Kershaw are hopeful he can make at least one regular season appearance to get him ready for the postseason. (Last updated: Sept. 18)

C (fractured left big toe)
Expected return: Maybe postseason
Barnes exited in the fifth inning on Sept. 15 after fouling a ball off the same toe that landed him on the injured list on Aug. 19. The injury will likely keep Barnes out for the rest of the regular season, but the Dodgers are hopeful he’ll return in time to serve as the team’s backup in the postseason. (Last updated: Sept. 16)

LHP (left hand fracture)
Expected return: Likely out for season
Banda, who has been one of the Dodgers’ best bullpen finds this season, will now miss an extended period of time after unexpectedly being placed on the injured list with a left hand fracture.

Manager Dave Roberts said Banda took on a “solid object” in a moment of “frustration and weakness,” which led to a hairline fracture on his pitching hand.

“It was something that, emotions kind of played into it, with the outing that he had last night,” Roberts said. “It’s something that I know he regrets, we all regret. And he’ll learn from it.”

Since being acquired from the Guardians, Banda posted a 3.23 ERA in 46 appearances with the Dodgers. (Last updated: Sept. 10)

60-day IL

RHP (right elbow tendinitis)
Expected return:
2025
After not going through with a simulated game on Sept. 13 due to right elbow discomfort as he warmed up in the bullpen, Glasnow got additional scans to determine the severity of the injury.

Those scans revealed a “sprained elbow,” manager Dave Roberts said on Sept. 14. Glasnow, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on Sept. 18, has been shut down from throwing for the foreseeable future, ending his season much sooner than the right-hander and the Dodgers were hoping.

“It’s a big blow,” Roberts said. “Looking at what he meant for our ballclub, what he’s done for us, what we expected him to do, certainly there’s going to be a cost. But we have to move on, and we will, and we have capable people. I feel bad for Tyler because he did everything to stay healthy and get back, and it just wasn’t going to happen.” (Last updated: Sept. 18) More >>

RHP (right plantar fasciitis)
Expected return:
TBD
Brogdon, who was acquired from the Phillies on April 6, has been sidelined since April 10 and was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 19. He began a rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Aug. 17, throwing a scoreless inning. He moved to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 20, where he has made six scoreless appearances as of Sept. 3. (Last updated: Sept. 4)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Possibly September
Gonsolin expressed optimism he will return before the end of the season, and manager Dave Roberts said the door is “slightly open” for Gonsolin to pitch this year. Gonsolin pitched three live batting-practice sessions in Arizona before rejoining the Dodgers in Los Angeles the week of Aug. 19. His fastball has been sitting at 92-94 mph and his command has been improving, according to team trainer Ron Porterfield.

Gonsolin doesn’t have enough time to build up as a starter and will pitch exclusively out of the bullpen if he does return this season. He had Tommy John surgery last September and has not pitched since Aug. 18, 2023. (Last updated: Aug. 25)

RHP (right forearm tightness)
Expected return:
2025 at earliest
Ryan had successful Tommy John surgery after suffering a UCL strain during his Aug. 11 start against the Pirates. After multiple scans, the Dodgers determined he needed Tommy John surgery. The 26-year-old rookie right-hander went 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA in four starts before suffering his season-ending injury. (Last updated: Aug. 25)

RHP (right flexor tendon surgery; esophagus)
Expected return: 2025
May underwent surgery to repair his esophagus and stomach on July 10 after reporting pain in those areas after dinner that day.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on July 14 that he “was shocked” by the news, noting May was in Arizona.

“Soreness of the throat and the stomach, and goes to the ER and gets surgery,” said Roberts. “He gets surgery, and he’s done for the year. Obviously, him coming back, if everything was great, was still a longer shot. But how his season ended is very unfortunate. I’m just glad he’s OK.”

May underwent right elbow surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to repair his flexor tendon July 18, 2023. It was his second major elbow surgery in the past three seasons, and the Dodgers placed him on the 60-day injured list to begin the 2024 season. Read more >> (Last updated: July 14)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return:
2025
Sheehan suffered an injury in his first bullpen session of the spring and never got into Cactus League action. The right-hander had started throwing to hitters for the first time, but on May 16 the Dodgers announced that he had undergone successful surgery on his right UCL that would end his 2024 season.
