Joe Ryan and Pablo López, Twins
The Twins scratched Ryan from his scheduled start against the Red Sox shortly before first pitch on Feb. 21 due back tightness. An MRI revealed inflammation in Ryan’s back but nothing more serious. He will be shut down for a period of a few days, but as of now his status for the beginning of the season is not believed to be in question.
López will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery after an exam revealed "significant tearing" in the UCL in his right elbow. He first reported elbow soreness during his live batting practice session on Feb. 16, which was ended prematurely following the second pitch of his third simulated inning.
Brandon Woodruff, Brewers
Woodruff threw 26 pitches in a simulated game on Feb. 23, his first action against hitters since his comeback season ended due to a lat strain last September. Woodruff is right on the schedule he set with the team’s medical staff at the end of last year and said he feels strong, but he conceded that he’s behind some of the other pitchers in camp.
Manager Pat Murphy acknowledged the same, saying it’s possible that Woodruff will still be ramping up for the regular season when the Brewers host the White Sox for Opening Day on March 26.
Merrill Kelly, D-backs
Kelly was scratched from his live batting practice session on Feb. 21 after feeling some discomfort in his left-mid back area and he underwent an MRI the following day. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said on Feb. 24 that Kelly has since undergone further testing including a CT scan.
Gerrit Cole and Cam Schlittler, Yankees
Cole faced live hitters on Feb. 20 for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery, throwing about 20 pitches and sitting 95-96 mph.
Schlittler (mid-back inflammation) threw a bullpen session Feb. 17.
Jordan Westburg, Orioles
Westburg, who has been slowed by a tweaked right oblique early in Spring Training, has a partial UCL tear in his right elbow and will be sidelined for at least all of April, GM Mike Elias told reporters on Feb. 20. Westburg was scheduled to get a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection, Elias said.
Manager Craig Albernaz previously described Westburg as "physically unable to participate" in workouts. Asked whether Westburg's oblique was still the primary issue or whether he had another ailment to a different body part, Albernaz did not state the specific concern.
Josh Hader, Astros
Hader (left biceps tendinitis) has resumed playing catch on flat ground as of Feb. 21.
Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep, Braves
Braves manager Walt Weiss revealed Schwellenbach underwent an elbow cleanup surgery on Feb. 18 and that Waldrep will undergo a similar procedure on Feb. 23. The Braves aren’t providing a timeline for either starting pitcher. More >
Sebastian Walcott, Rangers
Walcott (MLB Pipeline's No. 7 overall prospect) had a successful internal brace surgery on his right elbow performed by the club’s team physician, Dr. Keith Meister, in Arlington last week, general manager Ross Fenstermaker announced on Feb. 24.
Ricky Tiedemann, Blue Jays
Tiedemann, who missed much of 2024 and all of the ‘25 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, has been shut down for the next week with left elbow soreness. The good news is that an initial MRI showed “nothing structural” in Tiedemann’s elbow.
Tommy Edman and Brusdar Graterol, Dodgers
Edman (right ankle) will start the season on the injured list as he recovers from offseason surgery, manager Dave Roberts said on Feb. 16. He has resumed taking swings and throwing and is also working through a running progression.
Graterol, who underwent right shoulder labrum surgery in November 2024 and missed all of 2025, will not be ready for Opening Day, Roberts said on Feb. 18.
Jared Jones, Pirates
Jones (right UCL sprain) threw to hitters on Feb. 20 for the first time since undergoing internal bracing surgery in May 2025.
