MILWAUKEE -- The Guardians received a clearer picture of José Ramírez's recovery timeline on Tuesday.
Manager Stephen Vogt said Ramírez underwent surgery earlier in the day to repair the fractured left hamate bone he sustained on Saturday against the Tigers, with the club expecting the six-time All-Star to miss approximately six weeks.
"We knew he was going to need surgery, so earlier today, he was able to get it done," Vogt said before Tuesday's series opener against the Brewers at American Family Field.
The Guardians announced that Ramírez underwent a procedure to remove the hook of the fractured hamate bone in his left hand. The surgery was performed by Dr. Thomas Graham in Lehigh Valley, Pa., and the club said the procedure went as planned.
Ramírez suffered the injury during Saturday's 3-1 win over Detroit. A scan later confirmed the fracture after he felt something wrong on a swing in the fifth inning.
The 33-year-old attempted to remain in the game despite the injury before ultimately being removed.
"He knew the position we were in," Vogt said on Saturday. "He said, 'Maybe I can at least play defense,' and couldn't squeeze his glove."
Ramírez was placed on the injured list on Sunday after appearing in all 72 of Cleveland's games this season. He is hitting .239 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs and a .757 OPS. His absence leaves a significant void in the middle of Cleveland's lineup as the Guardians continue their battle atop the American League Central.
"It's other people's opportunities to go play," Vogt said. "Just go be yourself. Don't try to be anything more than that."
Cleveland has already begun reshuffling its lineup in Ramírez's absence. Gabriel Arias was activated from the injured list and started at third base on Tuesday, while Brayan Rocchio moved into the No. 2 spot in the batting order behind Travis Bazzana.
