When the Red Sox traded Marcelo Mayer to the Giants at the Trade Deadline, hard-throwing lefty reliever Erik Miller was the headlining return. But Boston also brought in Carlos Gutierrez, a Mexico-born outfielder who now ranks as the club’s No. 14 prospect.
Gutierrez made his debut with High-A Greenville on Thursday, doubling and scoring a run during a 4-2 win for the Drive over Hudson Valley at Fluor Field.
Gutierrez ripped a line drive to right-center field in the second inning, his first at-bat with the Drive. He took advantage of a misplay on defense for the hustle double. Ronny Hernandez then singled two batters later, and Gutierrez used his 55-grade speed to tie the game at 1 apiece.

The 21-year-old Gutierrez signed with the Giants in 2023 after helping Mexico win a bronze medal at an 18-and-under World Cup Qualifier. He had a roaring start to his professional career with a .359 batting average in his first Complex League action, though recurring back injuries have limited him on the field.
However, Gutierrez appeared healthy this season, again flashing his bat-to-ball skills, speed and fielding. He was tied for fourth among non-Complex League Giants prospects with a 124 wRC+ before the trade to go along with 26 stolen bases.
