CLEVELAND – The Indians will have to wait until next homestand to experience their first home game with 100% capacity at Progressive Field.

Rain got in the way of the series finale between the Indians and White Sox on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams will instead play a split doubleheader on Thursday, Sept. 23, to make up for the postponement.

Fans with tickets to Wednesday’s game will be able to use the same ticket to attend the 1:10 p.m. ET makeup game on Sept. 23, but will not be able to stay for the night cap. For those who cannot go on Sept. 23, they will be able to exchange their tickets for one of 13 game options. All exchanges must be made by 11 a.m. on Sept. 23.

The White Sox won't return to Cleveland until the end of September, prompting this decision. What could be a close division race will now be punctuated with a five-game series between these two clubs in the final week of the season. Gates will open at Noon on Sept. 23 for the 1:10 p.m. makeup game, and the ballpark will be cleared before ticketholders for the originally scheduled 6:10 p.m. ET can enter.

The Indians will enjoy an off-day on Thursday before heading to Baltimore for a three-game set on Friday. Jean Carlos Mejía, who replaced Eli Morgan as Wednesday’s probable starter, will make his first career start in the series opener at Camden Yards, and Aaron Civale is slated to get the ball on Saturday. Cleveland has yet to announce who’s expected to start on Sunday.

Morgan made his Major League debut last Friday in rain, cold temperatures and high winds. The Indians’ coaching staff was sure to reassure him that he wasn’t being evaluated on his performance in that weather, and the decision to start Mejía instead of Morgan had nothing to do with his debut, according to Indians pitching coach Carl Willis. Mejía has made three relief appearances in his short time in the Majors and has yet to give up a run.

“Our thought all along has been that [Mejía] could potentially be a guy to insert himself and get into this rotation,” Willis said. “Just feeling like J.C. is deserving of the chance and performed to the caliber of work that he deserves an opportunity to see maybe how it plays out as a starter and build him up and maybe insert him in that role.”
