Electric Run All-Star 5K lights up Miami

July 8th, 2017

MIAMI -- Downtown Miami is already home to a world-famous EDM music festival each spring, but the first Electric Run MLB All-Star 5K upped the neon wattage on a muggy summer Saturday evening.
It marked the first time Major League Baseball has hosted an evening All-Star 5K. The Electric Run featured light projections, glow-in-the-dark activations and zones along the course, with an estimated range of 3,000 and 5,000 participants in attendance.
The event has taken place around the world -- from the United States to Europe to Dubai.

"The Electric Run is kind of a running event meets electric light show meets installation art," said Travis Snyder, the founder and CEO of Bigsley Event House. "For the event today, we've closed down Bayfront Bridge, and there's going to be 400 feet of arches that light up and coordinate with music so you'll run underneath them, and they will pulse according to the beat."
And you never know who you'll bump into. Three Rangers fans from Fort Worth and Arlington, who met at last year's Midsummer Classic in San Diego, saw each other prior to Saturday's event.
"I usually do the run, and it's just because it's fun, plus it's intentional exercise on vacation," said Leeann Austec, who is volunteering at Fan Fest and has been to 16 All-Star Games. "Find ways to stay active even when you're volunteering."

Along the way, runners -- who were encouraged to come in costume -- encountered rainbow road with views of the bay, an under-the-sea area with black light jellyfish and foam, a Nathan's Famous seventh-inning stretch zone and a T-Mobile candy land with 20-foot-tall ice cream cones.
"We did Electric Run maybe three years ago, and I just decided to do something a little out of the ordinary," said Eloy Gonzalez from Fort Myers. "It's fun, and I like to be active and run and act goofy. For the attention."
Past the finish line, GRAMMY Award-winning artist Lil Jon DJ'ed a set as runners brushed off fatigue on the dance floor with the help of a beer garden.
Net proceeds will benefit MLB Charities to support youth baseball and youth softball programming. According to the Electric Run's website, the aim is to promote health, fitness and celebrating with friends. Everyone, no matter their age, should be able to experience music and lights in an environment that is healthy and happy.
"Completely different than any I've ever run through here, " said Jonathan Fetter, who runs 5Ks and half-marathons. "The time at night, the lights with the music throughout the course was really cool. We stopped a lot. We didn't do it for time. I didn't care. Kept a slow pace. It was more for the experience."
