MIAMI -- The Marlins have another candidate for a super-utility role.
On Wednesday, the club announced it has claimed infielder/outfielder off waivers from the Royals. He has been added to Miami's 40-man roster, which is full.
The 26-year-old is a switch-hitter who combined to play in 86 big league games in 2018 with the Reds and Royals. Miami covets versatility, and Herrera saw action in the Majors last year at all three outfield spots, plus second and third base.
In his first big league season, he had a slash line of .234/.286/.317 with 14 doubles, three triples, one home run and 20 RBIs. After appearing in 11 games with the Reds, he finished up the season with Kansas City, getting into 75 games.

Mostly used at shortstop earlier in his professional career, Herrera played in 42 big league games in the outfield in 2018, as well as 18 games at second base and five at third.
At Triple-A last year, Herrera hit .270/.333/.516 with four home runs, 16 RBIs and 19 runs scored in 33 games.
If he makes the club, Herrera could fill a role similar to that of , a versatile bench player on the 2018 Marlins.
