JUPITER, Fla. -- Since breaking into the big leagues in 2012, Dan Straily has not spent a day on the disabled list. The next few days will help determine if that streak is about to change.
Straily is dealing with right forearm inflammation, and he will remain in no-throw status for five or six days. The 29-year-old and the Marlins are confident the injury is minor, and they are taking precautionary steps to make sure he misses as little time as possible.
"We haven't put any timeline on it," Straily said. "Right now, the only thing we're doing is not touching a baseball."
Straily experienced some mild tightness in his throwing arm on Monday, after throwing 60 pitches in a Minor League game.
An MRI revealed mild inflammation.

The Marlins initially had scheduled Straily to start the second game of the season, on March 30 against the Cubs at Marlins Park. The setback will change those plans. Still, he could avoid being on the disabled list and slide back to the fifth spot in the rotation, but only if he is cleared to throw by around Sunday and can get some mound sessions to get back on track.

"I could go out there and long-toss and play catch and do all that kind of stuff right now," Straily said.
But the Marlins' medical staff stressed to all its players to say something if something doesn't feel right.
"Something got a little tight, and I said, 'Hey, maybe this is not what we should be doing right now,'" Straily said. "Just trying to make sure we don't mess it up.
"Let's just shut it down and make sure we get all the inflammation away so we don't have to deal with this the whole year. That's the whole goal."
Injury update
Shortstop JT Riddle was scheduled to play in a Grapefruit League game for the first time on Wednesday. Initially, he was scheduled to lead off, but after going through batting practice, he felt some soreness in his right shoulder and was scratched from the game Miami lost, 13-6, to the Cardinals at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Riddle had surgery on his left shoulder in August, but he continued to build up his right arm because he wasn't cleared to begin throwing again until January.

"It's something we've been monitoring every day," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "It hasn't been consistently perfect every day. It's been getting better, but he has some days where it's a little rough. Today was a day he was having trouble getting loose."
Yadiel Rivera, a non-roster invitee, stepped in for Riddle.
The Marlins are hopeful Riddle will be ready for Opening Day. He's been able to get at-bats in Minor League games and started playing in the field a few days ago. Wednesday was to be his first Grapefruit League game.
Camp battle
Justin Nicolino threw 2 1/3 innings of relief on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. The left-hander is competing for either a rotation spot or a spot in the bullpen, and he is out of options.
"[We] keep looking at him, as much as anything," Mattingly said. "Get him in there in different roles and then try to make that decision."
