NEW YORK -- Yankees left-hander Max Fried, on the injured list since mid-May because of a left elbow bone bruise, continues to make progress.
After having a bullpen session on Friday, Fried threw live batting practice Sunday morning at Yankee Stadium. He threw 36 pitches without any problems. Fried was able to throw his four-seamer, slider and cutter.
Fried most likely will have another live session on Thursday or Friday. If things go well, he can start thinking about a rehab assignment, according to manager Aaron Boone.
“It’s been a good run-up for him. Obviously, another step today. Obviously, we are getting closer by definition,” Boone said. “I know he has felt really good. He has recovered really well from all his throwing.”
While he was out, Fried spent time working on his mechanics. He said he never felt comfortable on the mound all year.
“I’m trying to dial it in, be a little more balanced and just be more on time,” Fried said Saturday. “I’ve been playing with a few things. It felt really good, so far. I’m trying to take it into some live sessions and some games here.”
Fried is 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA in 10 starts this season, his second with New York. His return would potentially give the Yankees a formidable 1-2-3 punch atop their rotation alongside American League Cy Young Award frontrunner Cam Schlittler and 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole.
