MIAMI -- Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix addressed the media to discuss the club’s first month of the season. Below are some of the highlights.

Manager Skip Schumaker has frequently mentioned that he has to put the players in a better position to succeed. Do you think you’ve done that for the coaching staff and him?
“I hope so. But when you have this record, I think we can all improve. I think I can improve, the coaches can improve, the players can improve. That's what we're all looking to do every day. And frankly, that's what we're looking to do even when we're winning games, and more so when we're not.”

When you mention that you're looking for improvement on the front-office side, what are you looking for? Specifically, is it to explore more signings or trades? Or people coming up from the Minors?
“It's all of the above. We're always exploring ways that we can improve the roster in the short term and long term. And right now, when you have the record that we have, it's certainly a little more focused on what we can do in the short term and making sure that -- at the same time -- we're understanding that we don't want to panic, that a lot of these guys have track records of performance that we believe in, and that we know that they're working hard. We know that they care, we know that they're trying, we're just all trying to get better.”

What’s that balance between the short and long term?
“It's a constant thing that we're always thinking about, and I think with the record that we have right now, it perhaps changes decisions compared to a different record. But there's also nothing that's set in stone at this point, and we're really thinking about that every day.”

If the team keeps losing, how can [fan] confidence be maintained, and what decisions would you have to make at that point if this continues?
“We'll see what happens if this continues. I'm confident that it will get better, at least in the short term. We have the guys to make that happen. But I knew when taking this job that to get the organization where I want it to be is going to take more than one year, regardless of what happens this year.”

Is there a timeframe that you have, just generally, when working in baseball ops as to when you think maybe, ‘OK, it's maybe time to reset for this year toward next year,’ [and] that you would probably start assessing moves that would be made to better the team for the future?
“We're always assessing those moves, right? We're assessing those moves from Day 1 of the season, determining what the 26-man roster should look like, who should be on the team, who should be in Triple-A, what trades we might want to make, what waiver claims. All of that is really an ongoing process.”
