Sanchez's Double-A debut plan still formulating

Cooper begins rehab assignment; Walker sits with hammy tightness

April 27th, 2019

PHILADELPHIA -- Exactly when Marlins’ No. 1 prospect Sixto Sanchez makes his Double-A debut remains subject to change.

What is definitive is the 20-year-old right-hander is scheduled to pitch in an extended spring game on Saturday at noon. But after that, the organization still hasn’t finalized anything.

Tentatively, the plan has been for Sanchez to join Double-A Jacksonville on May 2 at Mississippi. Those plans are still up in the air, however, because another possibility is for Sanchez to make at least one Class A Advanced Jupiter appearance, which also could be on May 2.

The Hammerheads are playing host to the Bradenton Marauders that night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Physically, Sanchez is fine. The Marlins just are treating the hard-throwing right-hander with care. His innings will be limited over the course of the season, and the organization is weighing the ways to best ease Sanchez into more challenging game action.

In extended spring games, pitch counts and batters’ faced are controlled. If any pitcher is having his pitches go up, for example, they can abruptly shut down an inning.

That all changes at either Jupiter or Jacksonville.

Sanchez, ranked as the No. 26 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 list, had his 2018 season cut short due to right elbow inflammation. He made eight starts at Class A Advanced Clearwater, and logged 46 2/3 innings.

Sanchez also dealt with right collarbone soreness, which caused him to not participate in the Arizona Fall League.

The Marlins acquired Sanchez, along with catcher Jorge Alfaro and lefty prospect, Will Stewart, plus $250,000 of international bonus money, from the Phillies for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto.

In Sanchez’s first extended spring outing, he worked two innings, and logged 24 pitches. His fastball maxed at 98 mph.

Sanchez hasn’t dealt with any injury setbacks since the trade. Miami has been building up his throwing program slowly.

Worth noting

(left calf strain) began his rehab assignment with the Jupiter Hammerheads on Friday, playing left field.

• Lefty reliever returned from the paternity list on Friday, and lefty Jose Quijada was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans. Quijada impressed in two appearances, striking out three and giving up one hit in one inning. “He’s got room to grow, for sure,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “But he’s going to be a good one. This could be really good for him, because he got a taste. It’s a very small sample. But just the fact he sees what it’s like can be good for guys.”

• Infielder , who had three hits in Thursday’s 3-1 win in 10 innings, was out of the starting lineup on Friday due to some minor hamstring tightness. Mattingly said Walker could have played Friday, but as a precaution, he is getting at least a day off.
