NEW YORK -- Amidst a stretch of heavy Mets bullpen usage and his own poor performance, Tobias Myers became a roster casualty late Friday night when the team optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse following its 9-7 10-inning win over the Marlins.
In two corresponding moves, the Mets selected left-hander Cionel Pérez to the Major League roster, and lefty Anderson Severino was designated for assignment.
The Mets used seven pitchers in Friday's victory, including Myers, who allowed a game-tying two-run homer to Owen Caissie in the eighth. Over his last 10 appearances with the big club, Myers allowed 10 earned runs.
"Tough one, not an easy decision, given how important he's been for the team," manager Carlos Mendoza said pregame on Saturday. "... Just the situation we were in, pitching-wise, going into today's game -- he's one of those guys that has an option.
"We told him, 'Hey, you're going to be back here soon,' and he understood. Obviously, [he's] not happy about it, but that's the situation we're in. And he'll be back here."
Myers, Huascar Brazobán and Austin Warren were the only three relievers on the active roster with accessible Minor League options. But Brazobán has been one of the league's most valuable arms, while Warren, who earned the win on Friday with a scoreless 10th, has also been integral to the bullpen in recent weeks.
Myers began the season with a 2.05 ERA over his first 10 appearances before more recently running into a rough patch.
Pérez has a 4.34 ERA in parts of nine seasons in the Majors. He was signed earlier this month by the Mets and posted a 2.57 ERA in six games at Triple-A Syracuse.
