Lat strain brings Rogers' season to a close

September 19th, 2022

MIAMI -- Marlins left-hander Trevor Rogers has been shut down from throwing due to a Grade 1 lat strain, ending his 2022 season.

Rogers, who exited Saturday’s start against the Nationals after 32 pitches due to left lat discomfort, underwent an MRI that revealed the severity of his injury. With the season coming to a close on Oct. 5, time wasn’t on his side.

“Really not the way I wanted my season to end,” Rogers said. “A year of challenges and a year of growth for me, and honestly it could have been a lot worse. So just knowing it was just a Grade 1 lat strain, and being able to keep on top of it, with a lot of rest and recovery, it'll bounce back pretty quick.”

The 2021 National League Rookie of the Year runner-up, Rogers struggled for most of his sophomore campaign. Prior to a month-long stint on the injured list for back spasms, he had a 5.85 ERA, 4.2 walks per nine innings and 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings.

But Rogers, who said his previous back trouble wasn’t related to the lat strain, was regaining his form since returning from the IL. The 24-year-old had compiled a 2.95 ERA with 22 strikeouts and just three walks across 18 1/3 innings in three starts before Saturday.

“It was super frustrating,” Rogers said. “I was finally getting back to being myself and pitching at a high level, and of course had a little bump in the road to end it. It's a year of challenges for me for sure. But I definitely got a lot better this year. I know what I need to work on going into the offseason and come back better because of it.”

Rogers’ turn in the rotation comes up again in Wednesday’s series finale against the Cubs. Southpaw Braxton Garrett, who was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville last Tuesday because the club had six healthy starters, is Rogers’ likely replacement, though no official roster move has been made yet.

“I don't think if he had a couple more good starts it wasn't going to change his season,” manager Don Mattingly said of Rogers. “He's probably going to be disappointed no matter what. I think the fact that he kind of got himself back together is a confidence builder for him. Unfortunately, obviously, the injury, but other than the innings building, I don't think it does a whole lot. He'll be ready to roll. Looks like next spring should not be a problem at all. Should have a regular winter. Also important.”
