WASHINGTON -- Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb sprain Monday after he exited in the fifth inning of Sunday afternoon’s 6-2 win at Nationals Park.
“The initial information we’ve got on the exam is, at this point, non-surgical, but it’s still going to be a seven- or eight-day period at best before he could really kind of get back and do something other than run the bases,” manager Clayton McCullough said. “And that’s what precipitated the IL placement.”
The Marlins recalled infielder Jared Serna from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. The 24-year-old was not in the lineup for Monday’s series finale against the Nationals, but he will be making his MLB debut if called upon.
Miami also made a bullpen adjustment, optioning right-hander Wikelman González to Jacksonville and recalling lefty Cade Gibson.
Edwards had played in every game this season for the Marlins, starting all but six of them at second base. He’s slashing .282/.361/.376, and on Friday, Edwards became the fourth Marlins player to reach 20 stolen bases this season.
“We know how much X means to our team,” McCullough said. “So I don’t know if it will be about asking any one person to replace X. … I think it’s just the collective having to step up. Next-man-up-type mentality. And find a way to get the production from just some other areas.”
On Sunday, Edwards was covering the second-base bag as Jorbit Vivas stole second with a headfirst slide that appeared to catch Edwards’ glove arm.
Catcher Brian Navarreto’s throw bounded into shallow center field as Vivas scurried to third and Edwards removed his glove while grabbing at his arm in pain.
“I feel OK,” Edwards said postgame. “Vivas took off for the base. I was trying to catch it deep. I had a feeling the ball was kind of tailing, so it was taking me into the line. I tried to make a play on the pick and Vivas kind of beat me to it.”
The Marlins acquired Serna in the 2024 Trade Deadline deal that sent Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the Yankees. He has slashed .221/.303/.378 with 12 home runs in 91 games for Jacksonville while splitting time between second base and shortstop.
“I think Jared’s role right now initially is just to give us some infield coverage,” McCullough said. “Potentially come off the bench maybe to run or defend to shore things up.”
