ATLANTA -- Mets closer Devin Williams landed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right shoulder strain, adding another complication to his already difficult season.
Williams, 31, who was unavailable for a game last week due to what the Mets called right arm fatigue, returned last Friday in Pittsburgh but allowed two runs in a non-save situation. The Mets placed him on the IL three days later, calling up right-hander Jonathan Pintaro to take his roster spot.
Williams holds a 4.66 ERA in 42 appearances.
It’s unclear who will close in Williams’ absence, as the Mets traded his primary setup men, Luke Weaver and Brooks Raley, prior to the Aug. 3 deadline. Right-hander Daniel Duarte recorded a save in lieu of Williams last week, but the Mets have other hard-throwing options, including Dedniel Núñez and Jefry Yan.
Williams is in the first season of a three-year, $51 million contract.
