Mets-Cards finale postponed; makeup on Aug. 5

ST. LOUIS -- At around the time Wednesday’s series finale between the Mets and Cardinals was due to start, a smattering of Mets players spilled out of the dugout to catch a peek at the darkening sky. One of them, Jake Diekman, considers himself a tornado enthusiast; he used to look for twisters as a kid growing up in Nebraska.

Diekman showed off his cell phone, where he was tracking an extreme weather expert who was, in turn, following a tornado moving through eastern Missouri. That storm never wound up coming close to Busch Stadium, but enough rain lingered in the forecast for the teams to postpone their series finale.

The Mets will return to St. Louis for a 5:15 p.m. ET/4:15 p.m. CT makeup on Aug. 5.

For the Mets, that will complicate what was already a long road trip through the Western part of the country. With a stop in St. Louis between Anaheim and Denver, the Mets are now scheduled to play a 10-day, 10-game, four-city, three-time-zone trip.

“It’s part of it,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “It’s what we do. We’ll be ready for it. We’ll worry about that when we get there.”

In the short term, the Mets will push their starting pitchers back a day, meaning José Quintana will start Friday’s series opener against the Braves and Christian Scott will make his Citi Field debut on Saturday.

“It’ll be electric,” Mendoza said of Scott’s first home game. “I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a lot of people looking forward to watching Scotty pitch in Citi Field. So yeah, I’m expecting a bigtime crowd and a lot of support from our fans.”

The Cardinals, who have lost four consecutive games, received a brief reprieve in advance of their four-game set against the Brewers. St. Louis pushed back Wednesday’s probable starter, Sonny Gray, to the series opener on Thursday. The team has yet to announce the rest of its pitching.

“I'm going to sit down and figure out how we want to look at the next four days and then even beyond the four days from a player standpoint,” manager Oliver Marmol said.
