NEW YORK -- Fourteen plate appearances into Tommy Pham’s latest tour in New York, the Mets are parting ways with him.
The team designated Pham for assignment, he told reporters following their doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Rockies on Sunday. Pham went 0-for-13 with a walk during his brief stint with the team.
Signed to a Minor League contract in March, Pham earned a callup less than two weeks later for a Mets team seeking an offensive spark. He did not provide it, instead striking out in seven of his plate appearances.
Pham, 38, previously played 79 games for the Mets in 2023. They traded him to the Diamondbacks at the Deadline amidst a similarly disappointing season.
A 13-year veteran of 10 Major League teams, Pham has 149 career home runs but has not posted an above-average OPS+ over a full season since 2023.
The Athletic reported late Sunday that the team agreed to terms with veteran outfielder Austin Slater, an apparent one-for-one replacement for Pham. Slater, 33, is another right-handed hitter who was recently designated for assignment by the Marlins. He hit .174 with a .460 OPS over 12 games with Miami.
