New Mets prospects Smith, Stafura, Mathis lead High-A Brooklyn to wild win

Some of the Mets’ Trade Deadline additions joined the lineup at High-A Brooklyn this week, and three of them helped guide the Cyclones to a 10-8 victory over Wilmington at Frawley Stadium on Wednesday.

(Freddy Peralta trade) hit his first home run as a part of the New York organization, (Luke Weaver trade) doubled in his team debut and (David Peterson trade) doubled and drove in two in his second game with Brooklyn.

Stafura, the Mets’ new No. 11 prospect, led off the game with his two-bagger. Mathis (NYM No. 18) followed it up three batters later with a two-run double. It was part of a three-run first for Brooklyn.

After Wilmington tied things up with a three-run third, Smith (NYM No. 14) broke the deadlock in the fourth. He worked a full count before crushing the ball to left field for a solo shot. It was the 11th homer this season for Smith, who was briefly a Top 100 prospect in the past.

Wilmington scored four more unanswered runs in this back-and-forth affair before a six-run ninth clinched things for Brooklyn. Stafura worked a walk -- the third consecutive to begin the inning -- before Smith hit a sacrifice fly, and Jamari Baylor scored two with a single.

Then Yonatan Henriquez put down the exclamation point with a go-ahead three-run home run, giving Brooklyn its final 10-8 advantage.
