Monday's top prospect performers

October 18th, 2022

Here’s a look at Monday's top performers from the Arizona Fall League and beyond, including six players from team’s Top 30 Prospects lists.

Padres: Jackson Merrill, SS (No. 1), Peoria
What a showing the 19-year-old Merrill is putting together in the Fall League. San Diego’s top prospect has been one of the circuit’s most consistent hitters, batting .356 with 16 hits and a .937 OPS through 11 games. The power stroke emerged during the Javelinas' loss to Scottsdale, despite Merrill's first AFL home run. His first-inning solo shot off winning pitcher Noah Denoyer evened the score early, before Scottsdale ran away later on the heels of a historic power showing (more on that below). Still, it was a welcomed sight for Merrill, who launched six homers in his first season of affiliated ball, including five in 45 games at Single-A Lake Elsinore.

Orioles: Heston Kjerstad, OF (No. 9), Scottsdale
This Fall League has been a coming out party for Kjerstad, who didn't make his professional debut until nearly two years after the Orioles made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, due to myocarditis. He's making up for lost time, now hitting .404 with a 1.174 OPS and a circuit-leading 13 RBIs through nine standout games for the Scorpions. His latest came in their 6-4 win over Peoria, when Kjerstad notched his fourth home run of the Fall League without clearing the fence. His first-inning inside-the-parker was one of two the Scorpions hit; Kjerstad also drove in another run with a single, and finished with four hits. More »

Braves: Cal Conley, SS (No. 12), Scottsdale
Two inside-the-parkers, by the same team in the same game? It's only happened once in the last 45 years in MLB, but it's now happened in the AFL. The Scorpions' second of the game came from Conley, the Braves' fourth-round pick in 2021 who is turning heads with a strong first Fall League. Conley's fourth-inning inside-the-parker was a two-run shot; he also drove in two more runs with a single in the second, finishing with three hits and 4 RBIs. The stolen base he added ahead of Kjerstad's RBI single in the second was Conley's seventh in 10 AFL games. More »

Mets: Ronny Mauricio, SS (No. 6), Tigres del Licey
The 21-year-old Mauricio is playing winter ball after spending all of 2022 at Double-A, where he hit 26 home runs and stole 20 bases but struggled with swing decisions and taking walks. His approach was excellent in Licey's latest victory, Mauricio doubling three times and driving in two runs. He also walked twice and scored two runs in a strong all-around performance, the type the Mets will want to see more as they look forward to 2023.

**Cubs: Alexander Canario, OF (No. 9), Aguilas Cibaenas **
The Cubs are high on Canario’s power and athleticism after acquiring him from the Giants in the Kris Bryant trade in 2021. He showcased those tools by hitting 37 homers across three levels in 2022, and is doing so again in winter ball in the Dominican Republic. Canario starred in Cibaenas’ 11-8 win, slicing an RBI triple and crushing a solo homer as part of a standout night.

Cardinals: Connor Thomas, LHP (No. 24), Salt River
While the pre-game buzz centered on Surprise starter Kumar Rocker, the less-heralded Thomas out-pitched him to lead the Rafters to their 3-2 win over Surprise. While Rocker departed after two innings of three-run ball, the 24-year-old Thomas logged four innings of one-run ball, striking out 10 against only one walk. It was the circuit's first double-digit strikeout performance since 2014. It was also the latest strong outing from the 24-year-old southpaw, who is logging a 1.42 ERA through 12 2/3 innings so far this Fall League. He’s posted a 17-4 strikeout-to-walk rate in that span.
