Rogers lands on injured list due to flu circulating O's clubhouse

April 30th, 2026

BALTIMORE — The Orioles’ starting rotation has taken another temporary hit.

On Wednesday, Baltimore placed left-hander on the 15-day injured list, as the 28-year-old southpaw is dealing with an illness/flu (with the move retroactive to Sunday). Right-handed reliever was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk as the corresponding transaction.

Rogers became the 11th player currently on the O’s IL (and the 15th overall to spend time on the injured list this season). The rotation is also without righty Dean Kremer, who went on the IL with a right quad strain last Thursday. Right-hander Zach Eflin is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on April 8.

Manager Craig Albernaz said Rogers is dealing with a flu that is circulating around the Orioles' clubhouse. The lefty hasn't been at Camden Yards for a couple of days, and although he hoped to still make his next scheduled start on Friday, Albernaz wanted to be smart about the situation.

"It's hitting him pretty hard," Albernaz said. "It's just the unfortunate timing of it, because he's starting [Thursday] and throwing up, all that good stuff, it's tough for a dude to do that and then go pitch and start in a big league game. Obviously, he wanted to. But sometimes, you have to be the adult in the room and look out for a player. It'd be no benefit for Rog to try to push through it, because he doesn't have his strength back yet.

"We want to make sure that he gets rehydrated, he gets his strength back, and whenever the stint is over, he'll be ready to go."

The winner of the 2025 Most Valuable Oriole Award, Rogers has a 4.75 ERA through his first six starts of ‘26. He had a 1.89 ERA over his first three starts, then recorded a 9.53 ERA over his past three outings.

For now, the Orioles’ rotation features four right-handers — Kyle Bradish, Shane Baz, Chris Bassitt and Brandon Young, with Bassitt and Young starting the two games during Thursday’s traditional doubleheader vs. the Astros at Camden Yards.

Left-hander Cade Povich (who is at Triple-A Norfolk) is likely to rejoin the starting staff in the near future. The 26-year-old's most recent outing came this past Saturday, so he'd be on five days of rest if the O's call him up to start Friday night's series opener vs. the Yankees in New York.

Foster rejoins Baltimore’s bullpen after getting optioned to Triple-A on Saturday. The 27-year-old righty had a 6.35 ERA over four relief outings earlier this season, his first stint in the big leagues.

Right-hander Albert Suárez could also be back on the O’s roster soon. The 36-year-old, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, cleared outright waivers on Wednesday and elected free agency in lieu of accepting an outright assignment to Norfolk. However, the Orioles expect to re-sign Suárez to a new Minor League deal.
