Four Twins in good position for Starters Election

Five others within striking distance at their positions, need votes

MINNEAPOLIS -- With four days to go in the Primary round of voting, continues to pace the American League shortstop field in votes for the 2019 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard, while , and remain in position to qualify for the Starters Election in the latest update ahead of Friday's voting deadline.

With 818,082 votes, Polanco holds more than a 160,000-vote advantage over the Astros' Carlos Correa, with the 25-year-old Twins shortstop well on pace to move on to the next round of voting.

Polanco, who is tied for the AL lead in extra-base hits (36) and leads all Major League shortstops in batting average (.332), on-base percentage (.395) and slugging percentage (.557), could become the first Twins infielder to start a Midsummer Classic since Roy Smalley in 1979.

Cron maintained second place on the first-base ballot, but the Indians' Carlos Santana has closed the gap between second and third place to only 25,467 votes. Cruz is in the cutoff -- third place -- to qualify for the next round at designated hitter and still holds nearly a 144,000-vote lead over fourth place, Shohei Ohtani. Rosario, in sixth place among outfielders, remains in good position to move on, with the top nine outfielders advancing to the Starters Election.

has fallen out of the qualifying field for catchers after Astros backstop Robinson Chirinos overtook him for third place. With that said, remains fourth among second basemen and has moved up to fifth place in third-base voting, nearly 134,000 votes behind the Royals' Hunter Dozier in third place. and are still 10th and 11th, respectively, in outfield voting -- the first two spots out of qualifying.

Polanco, Cron, Rosario, Kepler, Buxton and Gonzalez have never been named to an All-Star team.

Fans may vote in "The Primary" at MLB.com and all 30 club sites, the MLB At Bat and MLB Ballpark apps up to five times in any 24-hour period. Fans in the US and Canada can also vote on Google Search for every position, or up to 17 unique players per day, by searching "MLB Vote" or the names of their favorite players. Primary voting ends at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, June 21.

The top three vote-getters at each position (including nine outfielders) per league will move on to "The Starters Election," which begins at noon ET on Wednesday, June 26. The votes will reset for a 28-hour voting window that ends at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 27. Starters for the 2019 Midsummer Classic will be unveiled on ESPN that night at 7 ET. The pitchers and reserves will be announced on Sunday, June 30, at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Then on Tuesday, July 9, during the 2019 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard, fans may visit MLB.com and the 30 club sites to submit their choices for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet.

The 90th Midsummer Classic, at Progressive Field in Cleveland, will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 180 countries. FOX Deportes will provide Spanish-language coverage in the United States, while ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage.
