NEW YORK -- Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre received a text from Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez after Tuesday's game. Beltre hit a home run off him in the Rangers' 11-4 victory, and Hernandez wanted to know what was up with Beltre's stoic response.
Hernandez seemed to enjoy making Beltre look bad on a strikeout early in the game. But the home run by Beltre came in the sixth and provided the final margin. The 11 runs allowed were a career high for Hernandez.
"I don't want to disrespect him or his teammates or anybody, because I don't think it was appropriate for me to do anything in that moment," Beltre said.

Beltre and Hernandez were teammates on the Mariners from 2005-09. They are close friends, and their matchups have always been fun for both players and fans watching them do battle.
"Obviously, when we face him, we want to beat him," Beltre said. "That's the bottom line. We have a friendship, but when we face him, we want to beat him. I don't think, with the respect he has around the league, I don't think anyone was happy with the way he was pitching the other day."
The loss left Hernandez with a record of 8-10 and a 5.73 ERA. Beltre, who had a long talk with Hernandez on Wednesday, said it's tough to watch his close friend struggling.
"He's a really competitive guy, and he feels like he's letting his team down," Beltre said. "It's not easy to struggle in the big leagues, especially him, a guy I know who likes to compete, be out there and who likes to pitch. He feels like he should be able to pitch better."

It hasn't been easy for Beltre either over the past few years. Injuries have kept him from being on the field as much as he would like, and the Rangers are headed for their second straight losing season.
But he is still finding a way to enjoy the game, and the possibility exists he could be back next season.
"It's always nice to find a way to enjoy what you do," Beltre said. "Nobody is forcing me to be here. If you enjoy what you do and have fun and play the game right and give it your all, then your ability comes out.
"Sometimes it's difficult, when the team is losing or you're not doing well, sometimes it's difficult to stay positive and have fun, but I try my best. I know I'm at a stage right now where any day I can go pack my bag and go home and be happy, so I try to enjoy it, because I don't know when it's going to be my last."
Banister not buying Gallo rep
Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo went into Thursday's game hitting .279 with a .405 on-base percentage and a .738 slugging percentage since the All-Star break. He hit .187 with a .296 on-base percentage and a .443 slugging percentage before the break.

Gallo's surge is similar to what he experienced after the All-Star break last year, but manager Jeff Banister is not ready to declare his young slugger a "second-half player."
"I don't buy into first half, second half," Banister said. "I know that, obviously, Joey has had two full seasons in the big leagues. Second half seems to be good. I'm not ready to say that. I believe in Joey. He's going to hit both parts of the season. I know he is in a pretty good place right now, swinging the bat well. Joey is still learning to play at this level. He is a young guy, there is still a lot of growth. We see it."
Rangers beat
• Triple-A Round Rock reliever Connor Sadzeck has been activated off the disabled list after being sidelined since June 19 with an oblique injury. Sadzeck is still on the 40-man roster, but the injury kept him from getting consideration with all the changes in the Rangers' bullpen.
• Outfielder Delino DeShields is eligible to come off the concussion disabled list on Friday, but he has not completed all the necessary tests and is not expected to be ready.
• The Rangers are staying with a six-man rotation right now, which means Bartolo Colon's next start is on Monday instead of Sunday. Carsten Sabathia is pitching for the Yankees on Sunday, and Colon (549) and Sabathia (530) rank 1-2 among active starters in career starts. Colon also leads all active pitchers with 246 wins, and Sabathia is second with 243.

• Left-handed pitcher Brandon Mann has been assigned to Round Rock after clearing outright waivers. He was designated for assignment after left-hander Zac Curtis was claimed off waivers from the Phillies.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
