MINNEAPOLIS -- Bartolo Colon was good on Sunday afternoon, but Twins starter Jose Berrios -- who is 21 years younger -- was overpowering and the Rangers' seven-game winning streak is over.
Berrios held the Rangers to three hits over seven innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters in the Twins' 2-0 victory on at Target Field. Berrios' performance spoiled Colon's attempt to tie Dennis Martinez's record of 245 wins, the most ever by a pitcher from Latin America.
"I pitched a great game, but I have to give credit to Berrios on the other side, he pitched a great game too," Colon said.
Colon allowed two runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts in seven innings. He had not allowed a run through four innings before the Twins broke through in the fifth on a leadoff double by Robbie Grossman and a two-out single by Bobby Wilson. Grossman added an RBI single in the sixth.
"I will take those type of outings from Bartolo every time," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "You just have to tip your cap to a guy who had really good stuff. Bartolo was solid for us, great mix of fastball location, in the strike zone with all of his pitches. Just commanded the fastball all throughout, hit all quadrants and managed the game well for us. I thought Bartolo threw the ball extremely well. Berrios was just really good."

The Rangers' only threat came in the first when Shin-Soo Choo led off with a double to extend his on-base streak to 37 straight games. Adrian Beltre would single through the left side with one out, but third-base coach Tony Beasley held Choo at third as Eddie Rosario, the Twins' left fielder, got to the ball quickly.
"Rosario … he has a great arm, one of the best arms in baseball," Choo said. "As soon as it was hit, I was running, but I saw Beasley make the call and stop me. When [Rosario] got the ball, I hadn't even touched third base. He made the right decision."
Choo ended up being stranded when Berrios struck out Rougned Odor. The only other hit off Berrios was a bunt single by Odor in the seventh. Trevor Hildenberger set down the Rangers in order in the eighth and closer Fernando Rodney struck out the side in the ninth.

The Rangers aren't the only team that has had trouble with Berrios. He is 5-1 with a 2.05 ERA in his last eight starts.
"[Berrios] was pretty good," Rangers outfielder Delino DeShields said. "He's got good stuff and commanded it well for the most part. He was getting ahead of hitters and when you do that, the off-speed stuff gets better. He did a good job of attacking us all afternoon."

Opponents are hitting .203 off Colon through the first time in the order. That jumps up to .319 the second time and .301 through the third time.

Rosario led off the fourth for the Twins with a single to center, bringing up Eduardo Escobar. Colon bounced a 1-2 pitch and catcher Isiah Kiner-Falefa blocked it nicely. Rosario started for second, stopped and tried to go back, but was thrown out at first by Kiner-Falefa, snuffing any potential rally. Escobar hit a double shortly after.

Cole Hamels opens a three-game series against the Padres when he takes the mound at 7:05 p.m. CT Monday at Globe Life Park. Hamels is 3-3 with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in his last 10 starts. He is 1-5 with a 4.91 ERA in seven home starts. Hamels, who is from San Diego, is 9-2 with a 2.25 ERA in 17 career starts against the Padres, but will be facing them for the first time since 2015. Left-hander Joey Lucchesi will pitch for the Padres.
