ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have added Twins bench coach Derek Shelton to their list of managerial candidates, an industry source said Tuesday.
Shelton was one of the finalists for the Twins managerial opening after Paul Molitor was dismissed, but that job went to Rays field coordinator Rocco Baldelli. The Twins, though, are hoping that Shelton remains on their coaching staff.
Shelton, who interviewed with Texas on Tuesday, is the latest addition to the Rangers' expanded search, although it is still not completely clear which candidates are getting serious interviews. It does appear that the Rangers are not completely satisfied with those who were on the original list of candidates.
That list included interim manager Don Wakamatsu and farm director Jayce Tingler, and presumably they remain under consideration. The Rangers have also interviewed Astros bench coach Joe Espada, Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde and Phillies third-base coach Dusty Wathan.
Baldelli was also interviewed by the Rangers before being hired by the Twins. So too was David Bell, who was named the new Reds manager last week. Former Yankees general manager Joe Girardi was interviewed, but he is remaining as a television analyst.
Among possible latest additions to the search are Angels special assistant Eric Chavez, Dodgers third-base coach Chris Woodward and Red Sox bench coach Ron Roenicke.
The Rangers' on-going managerial search leaves their coaching staff in limbo. Hitting coaches Anthony Iapoce and Justin Mashore have left the organization and pitching coaches Doug Brocail and Dan Warthen face uncertain futures until the Rangers make a decision on their manager.
The Rangers have not set a deadline for their managerial hire. The next event on their calendar is the General Managers Meetings on Nov. 5-8 in Carlsbad, Calif.
Martinez leaves game
Outfielder Julio Pablo Martinez, the Rangers' No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline who is playing for the Surprise Saguaros, was removed from Tuesday's Arizona Fall League game due to right adductor muscle tightness. He reported it happening while running to first base on a ball hit in the infield. He will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
Martinez is one of three players on the fan ballot to select the final player on the West squad for Saturday's AFL Fall Stars Game in Surprise. Voting ends at 2 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
