Gallo's X-rays negative, rests his sore wrist

Bush throws in extended spring game on road back from Tommy John surgery

SEATTLE -- tweaked his right hand and wrist during a swinging strike in his final at-bat in Tuesday’s 11-4 win over the Mariners, but X-rays came back negative and the slugging center fielder said the issue is simply soreness. Gallo was out of the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale as part of a scheduled off-day.

To potentially account for his hand and wrist issue lingering, the club recalled outfielder from Triple-A Nashville and optioned left-hander Kyle Bird. Granite is expected to remain with the club when it opens a four-game series against the Royals on Thursday in Arlington.

“The strength was good. It was just more of, I don't want to use Joey Gallo today,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said before Wednesday afternoon's 8-7 win over Seattle. “We talked about it. Yeah, there may be some lingering effects with Joey. I just don't even want him to pick up a bat.”

Gallo, who has been one of the top hitters in the American League, said ice and light exercises will be the course of immediate treatment. The Rangers’ training staff was initially worried about the hamate bone, given where Gallo was experiencing soreness. He exited on Tuesday in the seventh inning with the Rangers up, 11-3, after struggling to get a firm grip on the bat handle.

“Guys like that scare me because there's so much torque,” Woodward said. “People don't realize how much torque that [is]. He's a big-body guy. He's a big strong kid. But that's a lot of torque, regardless of how big his wrist is. ... All it takes is like one weird manipulation of a swing and it's like all that torque goes into the wrist.”

By resting him Wednesday, the Rangers are also spelling Gallo from facing another left-handed starter, the fifth in a row vs. Texas since Saturday in Anaheim.

Entering Wednesday, Gallo had played in 47 of the Rangers’ 52 games, and he was most recently off last Wednesday. The early All-Star favorite is in the midst of a career year, slashing a personal-best .278/.422/.636 with 15 homers, while also playing a more demanding position as the Rangers’ everyday center fielder.

When he plays, Granite will be seeing his first Major League action since the 2017 AL Wild Card Game with the Twins. He’s spent the entire season at Nashville, slashing .291/.325/.362 with a homer and 15 RBIs over 48 games, and over his last 20 contests, he’s hitting .337 with just six strikeouts in 92 at-bats dating to May 7.

Granite joined the Rangers on March 3 via trade from the Twins, after Minnesota had designated him for assignment when it signed Marwin Gonzalez. The left-handed-hitting Granite spent Spring Training with the big league club in Rangers camp, and he’s been primarily a center fielder over seven seasons in the Minors. Granite was a 14th round pick in the 2013 Draft out of Seton Hall University.

Bird made just one appearance after being recalled on Monday, throwing 1 1/3 innings and giving up one run on three walks and no hits with two strikeouts in that night’s loss. He’s now had three stints with the big league club.

Following Wednesday’s transactions, the Rangers still have 39 players on the club’s Major League roster and four players on the 60-day injured list: right-handers Luke Farrell (jaw surgery) and Edinson Volquez (right elbow sprain), left-hander Yohander Mendez (left elbow ligament sprain) and outfielder Scott Heineman (left shoulder surgery).
