Kiner-Falefa, Lowe excited about new roles

Rangers shortstop spends most of his days at the beaches in Hawaii and first baseman Nate Lowe really enjoys improving his golf game in the offseason, but both are more than ready to get to Arizona for Spring Training.

The two joined the most recent Facebook Live as part of the Rangers’ Winter Caravan, which was moved to a virtual experience this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lowe, who was traded to the Rangers from the Rays on Dec. 10, said he’s talked to a few staff members and players within the organization so far, and is excited to get to Arizona so the whole team can be together.

Though neither Kiner-Falefa nor Lowe is positive when Spring Training will start, they are both working out as if it’ll start on time.

“It’s a big deal for us getting excited for the season because us growing together as a team and becoming a team with a whole new group of guys is such a big step to winning,” Lowe said. “I believe that the guys that are in this clubhouse that are coming in together and know the ropes already will help each other to grow together. We're going to move together as one unit and hopefully win a lot of ballgames here.”

Lowe also reflected on being left off the playoff roster in Tampa Bay for the second year in a row, as the Rays made it to the World Series. He was only active for the AL Wild Card Series in 2020.

“I got to see the stadium from a really cool angle but sitting up there and watching things was not all that fun,” Lowe said. “I'm really happy for the guys because they're really deserving human beings in that clubhouse that busted every day to win. But sitting up there and watching was not really fun at all personally.”

Kiner-Falefa was more than happy to talk about his new position as the everyday shortstop, especially after spending the majority of the last three seasons in a utility role. He'll replace 12-year veteran Elvis Andrus, who will become a multi-position utility player.

He said it wasn’t easy bouncing around the infield (as well as catching) and trying to do every little thing exceptionally well. Being back at shortstop is within his comfort zone, even after he surprised everybody by winning a Gold Glove Award at third base in 2020. Kiner-Falefa slashed .280/.329/.370 in the shortened 2020 season.

“For me, [moving to shortstop] is a dream come true,” he said. “I've only been a shortstop my whole career, so when I got to the Minor Leagues and started bouncing around, it was tough for me. I was learning a different game, a game that wasn't mine. Everything I've done to this point has been for someone else.

“I think the fact that this year I'm getting to play my position, do my thing, I think it's only going to benefit the team and I'm really, really excited to show people what I can do. Third base was really fun, but now I’ve got a little more range, a little more room to play with so I can't wait for that opportunity and try to go back-to-back [Gold Glove Awards].”

Kiner-Falefa thinks the Rangers have a lot of room to grow this season, especially in a competitive division. He said there were many games this past season they should have won, but the season was a constant struggle.

“We got a new team and I really liked the offseason we had,” Kiner-Falefa said. “I think that should give fans a lot of hope going to next year and then going to next offseason as well. We were rock bottom for a little bit, but we can only go up from there so I'm really excited with all the moves we've made and it's going to be fun to see a payout. I can't wait to be one unit out there and win some ballgames.”
