Rangers shake up front office, coaching staff ahead of 2027

ARLINGTON -- Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young announced a number of front office and Major League coaching staff updates on Monday.

Alex Cintron will not return to the Major League coaching staff in 2027, though he will remain in the organization in a different role. Dave Bush will not be returning as assistant Major League pitching coach. All others on Skip Schumaker’s staff are expected to return.

The Rangers will not fill Bush’s role, but are currently undergoing interviews for the assistant hitting coach position under Justin Viele, who is entering his third year with the club. Young said all candidates have been external to this point.

In 2026 -- with hitting coaches Viele and Cintron -- the Rangers ranked T-8th in wRC+ (102), T-21st in slugging (.396), T-18th in batting average (.242), T-14th in on-base percentage (.317), 25th in runs (673) and T-16th in walk rate (8.7%). The team-wide numbers were slightly up from 2025, but not to where they would want.

“This was a choice Alex made to balance what's best for him at this point,” Young said. “He will still be involved in our hitting department and work with the Major League team. It just will not be in a full-time capacity. We thought AC did a great job last year, and we hate that he's not coming back as the assistant hitting coach. But we are excited for him and the role he'll be in, and excited that he'll make a meaningful impact to our hitting department, not just with the Major League team but in the system as well.”

On the baseball operations side, the Rangers have also promoted Nick Hundley to vice president of player development, Mike Parnell to vice president of pro personnel and Hamilton Wise to vice president of amateur and international scouting

Hundley has spent the last five seasons in the Rangers front office as a special assistant to Young and a senior advisor of baseball operations.

“Nick is the top voice in player development,” Young said of Hundley’s new role. “Nick will oversee the day-to-day along with [farm director] Josh Bonifay, but this is a whole team of people. … I'm very excited for Nick. Nick is extremely talented. Nick's had opportunities to manage at the Major League level, and has remained a Ranger. I think he will be a great voice in our player development to continue a lot of the things that we've done, and enhance where we want to go. I'm really excited for this opportunity.”

Parnell has spent 13 seasons with the Rangers, including the past three years as senior director of professional scouting. He began his career with Texas as an intern in 2014, where he has remained ever since.

Wise has recently spent two years as the club’s senior director of international scouting. He also joined the front office as an intern in 2016, and has been involved in the club’s international scouting operations since 2017. In his new role, Wise will oversee Latin America and Pacific Rim scouting operations in addition to amateur scouting.

“Hamilton has been a tremendously impactful member of our front office team, though maybe not as visible,” Young said. “That said, this promotion is a tremendous growth opportunity. We love what he has done on the international side in terms of not just the management of his staff, but the strategy, the systems he's put in place. We expect that he'll be able to do the same on the amateur side while managing both. … Hamilton's extremely talented. He's a smart smart person. He's a very good critical thinker. He's got great leadership qualities, and this is a great opportunity for him.”
