Rangers dismiss entire Triple-A Nashville staff

September 3rd, 2019

NEW YORK -- The Rangers decided that the entire coaching staff for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds will not return for the 2020 season.

However, Geno Petralli, who was a coach on the team, will remain part of the Rangers organization as a roving instructor. General manager Jon Daniels said Petralli loves working with players in any role. Hitting coach Howard Johnson is still figuring out if he will stay in the organization.

Manager Jason Wood guided Nashville to a 66-72 record this season. The staff also included Eric Gagne (bullpen) and Brian Shouse (pitching).

“It’s kind of how we want to set things up in the future,” said Daniels of the moves. “Each of these guys individually are really quality people. They have done a good job for the organization. Our focus [now] is, how do we want to structure the [Minor League] department moving forward. There are some people [in the organization] who we feel are ready for additional opportunities. I wish nothing but the best [for the coaching staff who were dismissed]. I would highly recommend them.”

September could be big month for Mazara

Rangers outfielder was recently activated from the injured list and manager Chris Woodward wants to see more consistency from him against left-handed pitching in September. Entering Tuesday’s action, Mazara was hitting .211 (26-for-123) against lefties.

Texas is set to face several quality left-handers this month. With the exception of the Orioles, who the Rangers visit for a four-game set starting Thursday, they will exclusively face teams who have a chance to play in the postseason.

“You have seen what he has done against right-handers. It’s All-Star caliber,” Woodward said. “But this year, with the lefties, he gets in trouble. I don’t believe just because he doesn’t hit lefties one year that he is going to be a platoon player. I believe guys can make adjustments and can figure things out.

“I like what I heard as far as what he was doing [in his rehab assignment] to maybe counter some of the struggles he has had against lefties. But I want to see it.”
