Rangers FAQ: Latest on Odor, Trevino, Lynn

August 27th, 2020

ARLINGTON -- Addressing the biggest questions surrounding the Rangers as they approach the halfway point of their 60-game season.

What’s up with Rougned Odor?
“He has a pretty significant eye infection that kept him out yesterday,” manager Chris Woodward said on Wednesday. “Today, it seems a little bit worse, so we are going to keep him out. Some medicine and eye drops and all kinds of stuff they are trying to do to clean it up. Hopefully, it gets better, and he’ll be available tomorrow. I’m just not sure.”

Why was Jose Trevino batting third on Wednesday?
Because the Rangers are desperate to get something out of the No. 3 spot. Their No. 3 hitters went into Wednesday hitting .137/.183/.205 for a .388 OPS. has a .445 OPS in the No. 3 spot and an .869 OPS in the No. 5 spot.

The lowest OPS ever by a team from the No. 3 spot was .531 by the Yankees in 1917. That is back in the Dead Ball Era.

What about Joey Gallo in the No. 3 spot?
“I'm hoping that we eventually get to that point, where he feels really, really comfortable about being in that spot,” Woodward said. “Maybe it isn't the best spot for him. There is a comfort factor, obviously when you're a Major League hitter. I don't want to put a guy leadoff if he hates leading off, or the two-hole if he can't stand hitting second. We need him to be productive.”

Are the Rangers serious about trading Lance Lynn?
The Rangers are serious about listening to anything another club wants to talk about and they are always exploring their options. The Rangers like the idea of Lynn returning next season to head their rotation, and they don’t need to shed salary.

If the Rangers trade Lynn, they need to get more than one impact player in the deal and they need at least one of them to be Major League ready or close to it.

What does the manager have to say about the Rangers' poor defense?
“There is a snowball effect where it's just that -- that negative kind of pressure is like, ‘Who's going to make a mistake tonight?’” Woodward said. “It's hard to stop that. So we’ve got to reverse that. We’ve got to be tough mentally. We’ve got to stop it because we're killing ourselves every day. We’ve lost a lot of games over the course of the season because of that.”

What happened to Joe Palumbo?
He developed a bad case of ulcerative colitis, the same affliction that Jake Diekman and had in the past. He lost a significant amount of weight and strength and is just now starting a throwing program to get built back. The chances of him getting back in a Major League game this year don’t seem to be good.

What’s the latest roster move?
Right-hander was activated off the injured list, and right-hander was sent to the alternate training camp. Goody, who was sidelined with lower back spasms, has a swing-and-miss slider that the Rangers hope can be effective against Oakland’s right-handed hitters. Gibaut has power stuff, but his nine walks and 14 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings show he can still be erratic.

What was the manager’s best line from his pregame press conference Wednesday?
Woodward was asked about the possibility of Globe Life Field being used as a neutral site for the World Series and the Rangers being a part of it.

“As it stands right now, we probably aren’t the favorite,” Woodward said.
