The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Ariel Jurado (#57 -- pronounced air-REE-el hurr-RAH-doe) from Double-A Frisco. The team has also placed left-handed pitcher Matt Moore on the 10-day disabled list with right knee soreness.
Jurado, 22, is the scheduled starter for tonight's game against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, making his major league debut. He has compiled a 1-1 record with a 2.57 ERA (10 ER/35.0 IP) in 6 games/starts with Frisco this season, holding opponents to a .233 (30-129) batting average with 8 walks and 18 strikeouts. Jurado has quality starts in each of his last 4 outings, posting a 1.71 ERA (5 ER/26.1 IP) in that span.
Jurado will be the first Ranger to make his big league debut with a start since Chi Chi Gonzalez on May 30, 2015 vs. Boston (W, 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R). He will also join Nick Martinez (April 5, 2015 at Tampa Bay) as the only Rangers to make their MLB debut with a road start in the last eight years (2011-18). Jurado will be the youngest Texas pitcher to start in their first major league game since Tommy Hunter (22 years, 29 days) on August 1, 2008 vs. Toronto.
Moore has a 1-5 record and 7.99 ERA (37 ER/41.2 IP) in 10 games/9 starts for the Rangers this season, including allowing 5 runs/4 earned runs over 3.2 innings in his last start on Friday night. The first date Moore would be eligible to return is May 29.
With these moves, the Rangers still have 40 players on the club's major league roster, along with 6 players on the 60-day disabled list.
