ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have hired Shiraz Rehman away from the Cubs to serve as assistant general manager under Jon Daniels. His hiring is part of a significant reorganization of the Rangers' front office.
"I believe that Shiraz Rehman will be a valuable addition to our baseball operations team," Daniels said. "He has extensive experience with the Diamondbacks and Cubs in a number of roles that will be beneficial to our group. Shiraz will join Josh Boyd, Mike Daly and several others in key baseball leadership positions as we go forward."
Boyd, Daly and Jayce Tingler served as assistant general managers for Daniels this past season. Tingler, who was the farm director, is a candidate to be Texas' next manager and is also expected to be on the Major League field staff in some capacity next season.
Daly will concentrate on the farm system and international scouting. It was in the field of international scouting that he had his first impact on the organization. Among the players he helped sign were outfielder Nomar Mazara and infielder Rougned Odor.
Boyd will continue in his role as director of professional scouting. Among other ventures, he was instrumental in signing pitchers Colby Lewis, Yu Darvish, Tony Barnette and Chris Martin out of Japan. He is also overseeing the Rangers' efforts in research and development.
Rehman served as the Cubs' assistant general manager for strategic initiatives and will have greater responsibility with Texas. He will assist in the day-to-day management of Major League operations of the baseball department, including player acquisitions, roster management, player contracts and salary arbitration.
Rehman joined the Cubs in 2011 after six years with the D-backs. His responsibilities including providing scouting, financial and statistical information to support trade and player evaluation, salary arbitration, and development of the club's evaluation technologies and research and development department.
Rehman was appointed to his current post with the Cubs after the 2017 season and in that role focused on evaluating existing systems and identifying and implementing solutions in an effort to create competitive advantages in the organization.
He is a graduate of McGill University with a degree in finance and accounting, and has an MBA from Columbia. He began his career as an intern in the Red Sox's organization in 2005 under Theo Epstein. He is expected to begin working with the Rangers this week.
