The Brewers signed right-handed pitcher Bryse Wilson to a one-year Major League contract on Friday, and in a corresponding move, they optioned left-hander Drew Rom to Triple-A Nashville. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Easton McGee was designated for assignment.
Wilson, 28, was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Saturday and elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A Iowa. He has pitched to a 6.52 ERA in three big league appearances this season between the Cubs and the Phillies.
The Brewers are plenty familiar with Wilson, who appeared in 87 games for the organization from 2023-24.
“I’m ecstatic to be here,” Wilson said before Milwaukee opened a three-game series at Pittsburgh on Friday night. “When the opportunity came up, I didn’t even hesitate or explore other options. It helps to be with an organization I’ve had success in.”
He posted a 3.42 ERA in 181 1/3 innings, making a total of nine starts. Wilson’s best season came with Milwaukee in 2023, when he went 6-0 with a 2.58 ERA in 76 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
It’s unclear whether the Brewers plan to deploy Wilson as a starting pitcher or in relief. At minimum, he offers additional insurance for a rotation that is facing a bit of injury-related uncertainty: Left-hander Kyle Harrison is nursing a sore left elbow, and veteran righty Brandon Woodruff is seeking a second opinion after suffering a new anterior capsule injury. Not to mention, All-Star Jacob Misiorowski already has 111 innings under his belt -- putting him on pace to blow past the 141 1/3 innings he threw in 2025, between the Majors and the Minors.
Wilson owns a 4.86 ERA in parts of nine big league seasons with six Major League clubs.
