X-rays come back negative; shortstop will now undergo an MRI

ST. PETERSBURG -- Blue Jays shortstop was removed from Sunday's 2-1 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field after sustaining a left ankle sprain in a bang-bang play at first base during the fifth inning. X-rays were negative, but Diaz was scheduled to undergo an MRI and further evaluation.
After the game, Diaz was wearing a boot and moving around on crutches in the clubhouse.
"I don't know [about the severity of the injury],'' Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "It's definitely the ankle. We're going to look at it. Hopefully, it's not too bad.''
Diaz was called safe on the play but his left foot caught the outside of the first-base bag and he crumpled to the turf a few steps past the base.
Diaz, who collected an RBI single on the play with Anthony Alford scoring, was placed on a motorized cart and taken off the field for examination. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., replaced Diaz at shortstop.
