CHICAGO -- The Cubs have enjoyed plenty of legendary home runs throughout the franchise’s long history. Slammin’ Sammy Sosa dropped jaws as he rewrote the team’s record book. Glenallen Hill famously sent a ball to a rooftop beyond Waveland Ave. Dave Kingman launched some prodigious blasts.
There are some unofficial distances attached to tape-measure homers from previous eras, but the data has become more precise since Statcast began tracking baseball events in 2015. With that in mind, here are the Cubs’ 10 longest home runs on record (regular season and playoffs) during the Statcast Era.
1. Willson Contreras: 491 feet vs. Dodgers, Oct. 18, 2017
In the second inning of Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, Contreras jumped on a sinker from lefty Alex Wood, sending it soaring off the videoboard beyond the left-field bleachers. The Cubs' catcher took a moment to admire his titanic blast, which helped Chicago hold on for a 3-2 victory.
2. Javier Báez: 481 feet vs. Reds, Aug. 23, 2018
Báez sent a full-count slider from righty Anthony DeSclafani in the third inning to deep center field, where the ball sailed to the concourse behind the bleacher seats. It was a mammoth blast that was part of a 3-for-5 showing that powered the Cubs to a 7-1 win over the Reds.
3. Kris Bryant: 477 feet vs. Nationals, May 26, 2015
Bryant’s blast in the eighth inning off Aaron Barrett pulled the game into a tie and set up a 3-2 walk-off win for the North Siders. It was his seventh career homer en route to a then-Cubs rookie record of 26 blasts in ‘15, when Bryant took home the NL Rookie of the Year Award.
4. Ian Happ: 474 feet vs. A’s, Aug. 5, 2019
Happ’s first homer of the ‘19 season sparked a four-run outburst in the seventh inning at Wrigley, where the Cubs held on for a 6-5 win. The shot off Blake Treinen’s signature sinker sailed to right-center field, where it found the very top of the bleacher seats.
5. Kyle Schwarber: 473 feet at Brewers, July 28, 2019
Schwarber racked up seven RBIs in an 11-4 win over the Brewers, launching this jaw-dropping grand slam as part of his performance. The slugger sent a first-pitch fastball at the top of the zone from Zach Davies deep into the second deck in right field in the second inning at 113.8 mph. He added a three-run blast off Davies in the fourth.
6. Anthony Rizzo: 472 feet vs. Angels, April 12, 2019
Rizzo crushed a first-pitch fastball over the right-field bleachers at the Friendly Confines, where the ball rolled around the walkway beyond the seats for a two-run blast. The shot ignited a three-run first inning en route to a 5-1 win over the Angels.
7. Schwarber: 470 feet vs. Giants, May 23, 2017
The last time Giants righty Johnny Cueto had seen the Cubs, they pulled off a 1-0 win against him in the ‘16 NL Division Series. In his next encounter with the North Siders, Schwarber welcomed Cueto to Wrigley with a first-inning homer that soared over the right-field bleachers at 114.2 mph en route to Sheffield Ave. in the Cubs’ 4-1 victory.
8. Bryant: 469 feet at Rockies, Aug. 20, 2016
In the fifth inning of a 9-2 romp in Colorado, Bryant scorched his 31st homer of the year on a 3-1 fastball from Jeff Hoffman. The three-run blast was part of a 2-for-5, four-RBI showing. The baseball landed just to the left of the pine trees that occupy Coors Field’s backdrop in center.
9. David Bote: 469 feet at D-backs, April 27, 2019
Bote belted a pair of homers and collected five RBIs in a 9-1 road win over the D-backs -- highlighted by this shot off Zack Godley. In the third inning, Bote sent a 3-1 sinker rocketing to the second deck in left field at 113.8 mph for a three-run home run.
10. Michael Busch: 468 feet at Rockies, Sept. 15, 2024
Busch capped off a two-homer, three-hit day by sending this towering blast to the second deck beyond the bullpens at Coors Field. The ninth-inning shot off Justin Lawrence gave the Cubs’ rookie first baseman an even 20 blasts during a 6-2 win.
