CHICAGO -- The Cubs continue to work on building up their inventory of depth, adding seven players to the non-roster picture for Spring Training.

On Friday, Chicago announced seven Minor League signings that include non-roster invites to big league camp in Mesa, Ariz., this spring. Here is a look at the players added to the fold:

• LHP Stephen Gonsalves: The left-hander had cups of coffee with the Red Sox (three games in '21) and Twins (seven games in '18), but spent last season with Triple-A Worcester in Boston's system. While there, Gonsalves piled up 103 strikeouts vs. 52 walks in 73 innings with a 4.68 ERA.

• C P.J. Higgins: A 12th-round Draft pick by the Cubs in 2015, Higgins finally reached The Show with the North Siders as a backup catcher in '21. He went 1-for-23 in a nine-game stint before a right forearm injury required surgery, ending his season in June.

• RHP Jonathan Holder: The Cubs signed the 28-year-old Holder to an MLB deal last offseason, but a right shoulder injury cost him the '21 season. Holder spent parts of the '16-20 seasons with the Yankees, posting a 4.38 ERA in 157 appearances in that span.

• RHP Mark Leiter Jr.: Last season, Leiter split his season between Double-A and Triple-A in Detroit's system, logging a 3.77 ERA with 145 strikeouts against 31 walks in 114 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old righty had a 5.53 ERA in 47 games at the MLB level in '17-18 between stints with the Phillies and Blue Jays.

• INF Dixon Machado: A middle-infielder for the Tigers during parts of the '15-18 seasons, Machado spent the '19 tour with Triple-A Iowa. He played for Lotte the past two seasons, in the Korea Baseball Organization.

• LHP Locke St. John: While at Triple-A Toledo for Detroit last season, St. John turned in a 2.58 ERA with 75 strikeouts against 25 walks in 59 1/3 innings (36 games). He appeared in seven MLB games for Texas during the '19 campaign.

• INF Ildemaro Vargas: The 30-year-old had stops with the Cubs in '20 and '21 and returns as a versatile utility option. Last year, Vargas appeared in 34 games in the Majors between the Cubs, Pirates and D-backs.
