Schneemann shows serious hops with full-extension HR robbery

CLEVELAND -- isn’t valuable to the Guardians merely because he can play a half-dozen positions. He’s valuable because he’s exceptional defensively no matter where Cleveland puts him.

We saw that in action once more on Tuesday night in a 6-3 loss to the Nationals. Schneemann robbed Nationals third baseman Curtis Mead of a two-run homer by making a leaping catch at Progressive Field’s center-field wall in the fourth inning.

Over the Guardians’ past four games, Schneemann has drawn a start at three positions: shortstop, third base and center field. He found himself in center on Tuesday, and he came up big to keep things at a 4-0 deficit for Cleveland.

Guardians reliever Codi Heuer threw Mead a 93.7 mph four-seam fastball up in the zone, which Mead belted out to deep center. Schneemann was playing fairly close to the warning track and had time to size up the long drive. He went up and snagged the fly ball with a full-extension leap as he banged into the padded outfield wall.

Heuer was clearly impressed; he held his arms above his head and was frozen almost in disbelief on the mound. Guardians TV caught left fielder Steven Kwan jumping up and down and tapping Schneemann on the head in the dugout in the bottom of the fourth.

Schneemann was an American League Gold Glove Award finalist for the utility position in 2025. He entered Tuesday with +1 Outs Above Average in center field this season, -1 at shortstop, +4 at third base and +1 at second base.
