Bote being evaluated after getting hit in helmet

February 24th, 2019

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Cubs infielder David Bote exited Sunday's game against the Giants in the second inning after being struck in the helmet by a pitch from left-hander Madison Bumgarner.

Bote was examined by a Giants team doctor at Scottsdale Stadium and was allowed to head back to the Cubs' complex after initial testing did not reveal anything that warranted a diagnosis. Bote will continue to be monitored and evaluated, and the Cubs will have an update on his status Monday morning.

With runners on the corners and no outs, Bumgarner lost control of a pitch that forced Bote to drop to one knee in the batter's box. After being tended to by manager Joe Maddon and assistant athletic trainer Matt Johnson, Bote walked off the field under his own power with them by his side. Bote, who started at third base for the Cubs, was replaced by pinch-runner Ryan Court.

Bote currently projects to open the season as a utility man for the Cubs, offering depth for second base, shortstop and third. Last season, the 25-year-old Bote hit .239 with six homers, 33 RBIs and a .727 OPS in 74 games as a rookie. He gained national attention when he launched a pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam on Aug. 12 against the Nationals.
