Injury updates: Bryant, Baez, Darvish

September 4th, 2019

CHICAGO -- Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was scratched from the starting lineup due to right knee soreness a few hours prior to Tuesday's 6-1 win against the Mariners. It is the same knee that has bothered Bryant off and on since late June.

"We've just got to watch it. I don't think it's anything awful," Maddon said. "I just talked to him. He didn't sound like he's in dire straits by any means. It's just bothering him."

Dating back to July 24, when Bryant left a game against the Giants due to the knee flaring up, he has hit .229/.299/.397 with six homers and 15 RBIs in 35 games. In that time period, Bryant has posted a 29.2-percent strikeout rate and 8.3-percent walk rate. On the season, he has a 22.2-percent strikeout rate and 11.6-percent walk rate with a .280/.379/.513 slash line.

Maddon said pairing Tuesday's day off with Wednesday's scheduled off-day for the Cubs made it an opportunistic time to give Bryant some rest. The third baseman will then be re-evaluated prior to Thursday's game in Milwaukee. Ian Happ started in place of Bryant at third on Tuesday.

Worth noting
• Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch twice in Monday's win, giving him a franchise-record 139 in his Cubs career. He surpassed the previous mark of 137 held by Frank Chance, who's owned the record since 1911. Rizzo's first career hit-by-pitch actually came via reliever Steve Cishek, who is now in the Cubs' bullpen.

"I saw it on the board and I was like, 'Whoa,'" Rizzo said. "I had no idea I was approaching it or anything. That's a lot of times being hit, right? Hopefully I get 138 more times, so I play for a lot longer."

• Shortstop Javier Baez (jammed left thumb) showed up to Wrigley Field feeling "a little bit better," per Maddon, but remained out of the starting lineup. The manager was optimistic that Baez might be able to return to the field on Thursday.

• Right-hander Yu Darvish (right forearm tightness) played catch during Tuesday's pregame and Maddon said the pitcher remains on target to start on Saturday against the Brewers.

• The Cubs also activated lefty Derek Holland from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, bringing the roster to 35 active players.

Quotable
"As far as the Cubs go, that's right up there with [the hitting streak by Joe] DiMaggio and [the consecutive games record by] Cal Ripken. I don't see anybody breaking that. I think where it sits right now, it's not going to be broken, but he has years to add onto that record." -- Maddon, on Rizzo's HBP record with the Cubs
