HOUSTON -- Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left calf prior to Tuesday’s game against the Twins at Daikin Park, and infielder Raynel Delgado was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land.
Astros manager Joe Espada said Monday night that Peña would be heading to the injured list, but he expects the injury won’t keep him sidelined for long.
“It’s going to be a minimum -- hopefully minimum -- IL stint,” Espada said following the Astros’ 5-4 loss to the Twins. “Hopefully, it won’t take him very long to get back.”
This will be Peña’s second IL stint of the season after he missed over a month earlier this season with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain. He is hitting .295 this season with six home runs and 21 RBIs, but he’s been hitting .307 since coming off the injured list on May 18.
Nick Allen, who was activated off the 10-day IL on Monday, and Delgado will split the shortstop duties until Peña’s return. Allen went on the IL on June 8 with a left hamstring strain and missed 19 games.
