'Tough way to lose': Error drops LA to 2nd

September 4th, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO -- On a night when manager Dave Roberts used every available reliever he had, it still wasn’t enough in a battle between the top two teams in baseball. And after the Dodgers’ 3-2 loss to the division-rival Giants in 11 innings on Friday night at Oracle Park, Roberts will have to carefully maneuver his way through the rest of the series.

After scheduled starter David Price was a late scratch because of an arm issue, Roberts turned to for an opener then used 10 relievers to cover the final nine innings.

Most of them pitched well, too. But the game ended on a bizarre error with on the mound, making just his second appearance since being selected off waivers by the Dodgers from the Rays.

-- playing first base for the first time in his professional career -- came off the bag on a wide throw from second baseman , who’s still getting the hang of that position. The runner, Buster Posey, just made it in safely. After a lengthy replay review, the call stood and the game was over, the Dodgers falling back into second place, a game behind San Francisco.

“We fought and we did a great job preventing runs,” Roberts said. “Our pitchers made pitches. For the game to end like it did, I feel bad for Evan, but he did everything he could to help us win a ballgame.”

Turner played mostly at shortstop before being acquired from the Nationals at the Trade Deadline, but he’s been primarily stationed at second base with the Dodgers.

“I didn’t feel like I double-pumped,” Turner said. “Got a good grip and let it go. Just pulled off Will a little too much. It sucks, obviously, when we’re playing for a division and these are the guys we have to track down. That play could have gave us another chance.”

Smith thought Posey was out but knew it was a close call.

“I was stretched out fully for it,” Smith said. “I thought I kept my foot on, umpire thought otherwise. It was pretty close. It’s a tough way to lose.”

The game-ending play overshadowed a mostly crisp night by the Dodgers’ bullpen. , who blew back-to-back save opportunities against the Giants earlier this year, pitched a scoreless ninth. Newcomer , called up from the Minors on Thursday and pitching for the first time since 2019, gave up a game-tying RBI single to Brandon Crawford in the 10th.

was charged with a run in the third after allowed an inherited runner to score, the only run the Giants scored prior to extras.

The good news? Roberts said all of the pitchers used Friday -- with the exception of Knebel -- will be available over the weekend.

And if there was a game that the Dodgers could afford to go deep into their bullpen in this series, this was it. National League Cy Young candidates Julio Urías and Walker Buehler are slated to start on Saturday and Sunday.

Buehler played a role in this one as a pinch-runner, scoring from third on Turner’s sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th.

The Giants were just as strong on the mound and kept the Dodgers’ offense quiet most of the night. had four hits and scored after doubling in the ninth. However, Los Angeles ran out of a scoring opportunity in the ninth and was thrown out at the plate in the 11th.

“Offensively, we just didn’t really threaten,” Roberts said. “We couldn’t get anything going.”
