Miggy Ro uses Charlie Freeman's glove to pitch 8th inning

September 29th, 2023

It’ll be years before Charlie Freeman has a chance to play in the Major Leagues. But his glove already made an appearance on an MLB mound on Thursday night.

Charlie, the son of Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, turned 7 in mid-September. He's already had some enviable big league exploits, including warming up alongside Clayton Kershaw’s son, Charley, in New York.

The Dodgers were wrapping up a four-game series at Coors Field, down 13-4 in the bottom of the eighth. Amid the blowout, manager Dave Roberts called shortstop Miguel Rojas to make his third pitching appearance of the season. The 34-year-old veteran donned Charlie's fire-engine-red glove and took the mound.

Rojas completed the eighth, allowing one run on a walk, an error and a single in the eventual 14-5 loss. He even rolled a double play to get out of the inning. While his velocity topped out at 70.8 mph, seven of Rojas’ pitches came in at below 50 mph. His slowest? A 39.9 mph curveball to Elehuris Montero.

Maybe it was fitting that Rojas was wearing Charlie’s glove -- Freeman’s son has proven he already has enough arm to perhaps match Rojas’ velocity. After all, Charlie launched his ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium in August 2022.

Charlie will always have Thursday night as evidence that his trusty red glove is big league-ready.
