SAN FRANCISCO — When Michael Toglia dislocated his right shoulder on Friday, the outfielder had every hope that he could play sooner than later.
However, the results of an MRI exam on Monday bore out the bad news. Toglia will need season-ending surgery, which will be performed on Tuesday in Cincinnati by Dr. Tim Kremchek.
"He had a labrum tear," manager Terry Francona said. "That kid, he swore he was going to play. When I saw him in the trainer’s room the next day, he was trying to do stuff. That’s pretty amazing to me.”
During a 9-0 loss to the Diamondbacks, Toglia played left field and made a nice diving catch in the first inning to rob Geraldo Perdomo of a likely extra-base hit. But he landed awkwardly on his shoulder making the grab, and had to exit the game. Francona was optimistic at the time that the injury might have looked worse than it was.
Cincinnati placed Toglia on the 10-day injured list on Sunday and recalled utility player Ivan Johnson from Triple-A Louisville in response.
A veteran signed to a Minor League contract and invited to big league camp at Spring Training, Toglia made his Reds debut on Aug. 11 after his call-up from Louisville.
Toglia, 28, batted .115 in 10 games for the Reds while playing left field, right field and first base.
