Indians hot offense halted by Orioles

CLEVELAND -- The Indians offense unleashed in its previous two games entering Friday night, scoring 23 runs on 25 hits, but had nothing left in the tank for their second game against the Orioles.

Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy held the Tribe to just three hits, allowing one unearned run through 5 2/3 innings in the Indians’ 5-1 loss at Progressive Field. It marked just the fourth time Cleveland has fallen to Baltimore since the start of 2017. The Indians have gone 12-4 in that span.

“Coming into the game, his ERA wasn’t good, but he’d been getting left-handers out,” Indians manager Terry Francona said of Bundy. “He continued that trend with a breaking ball, change-up, but he also got our righties out, speeding us up with the fastball and throwing breaking balls to them.

“He never really let us get comfortable.”

drove in the Indians' lone run of the game in the second inning off Bundy.

Prior to the Tribe’s victories on Tuesday and Thursday, the team had scored 23 combined runs with six homers in their previous nine contests. And while they matched their run total in the back-to-back wins this week, the bats quickly fell back to their old ways Friday, getting shut down by a staff that entered the night with the worst team ERA in the Majors (5.66).

Rodriguez continues to improve

Although allowed a season-high four runs on seven hits through 6 2/3 innings, the right-hander was able to work at least six frames for the fourth straight start, which is the longest streak in his career.

“Ya know, I thought it was the best he’s thrown, actually,” Francona said. “He threw more breaking balls tonight by far than he has in any other outing. I just think he’s fun to watch get better.”

Rodriguez matched his career-high, giving up two homers on the night. The first was a three-run blast by Jonathan Villar in the top of the third before Stevie Wilkerson took Rodriguez deep in the fourth.

“By no means were [the home run pitches] mistakes,” Rodriguez said through the team’s interpreter. “They were part of the plan and we executed in that way but also they executed and they executed their job.”

The Indians offense was unable to bail him out, as the Orioles’ bullpen worked 3 1/3 hitless frames to close out the night. Reliever ’s ERA increased to 5.40 after giving up an RBI-double to Wilkerson in the eighth for Baltimore’s final run of the night.
