Grandy nonchalantly robs Derby champ of HR

July 14th, 2019

The Mets started Sunday's series finale in Miami with a home run on the game's first pitch, and they would have had another in the first inning if not for some excellent defense by Curtis Granderson, who made a homer robbery look easy in Miami's 6-2 loss.

A batter after Jeff McNeil's leadoff swat, 2019 T-Mobile Home Run Derby champion Pete Alonso crushed a 96.6-mph Sandy Alcantara fastball deep to left. The veteran Granderson planted himself under the arcing fly ball and waited. As it plummeted down, Grandy hopped, reached over the short outfield wall and plucked the would-be solo shot out of the air for the inning's second out.

Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas said Granderson's play reminded him of when former Miami left fielder Marcell Ozuna scaled the ball in left field to rob a couple of home runs in 2017.

"I got flashes of Ozuna there of that play, except he didn't get on the wall," Rojas said. "Every player is different. Ozuna was climbing the wall, and Granderson just jumped and robbed it. It was cool to see."
